Why bother adding 10-15k worth of options when they aren't really "necessary"?

Quick look is that AAMI has the cheapest offering at $1900.
    Had a look at RACV?
They (RACQ) are doing my Tiguan and i am under 25.
Quoted at $650 with full disclosure of 10k worth of future mods

Its true they arnt nessisary. But I want to live with this car for at least the next 3 years or so. The options im adding imo should be standard equipment.

There is no 3 door coming to Australia, so I do not want it.

And by the time I add the options im looking at, it will be over my budget.

I am looking at a 3 Door White GTI.

4 things that are definite are:

NO LEATHER, 18" Detroits, MDI and Reversing Camera.

But then it gets fuzzy and hard to deside.

            - Adapative Chassis Control - (The way I think about it, is that the MK6 was designed with this in mind, or you may aswell get the Mk5)

            - Bi-Xenon Headlights - (I have two minds on this. "Why pay extra for something the car already has...headlights". "You get better vision, they look awesome, they have corning function AND those square cut outs on the bumper will actually be used for something, rather then becoming a painful reminder that I was too cheap to get them..."

            - Sat Nav - I have this in my current car, and I actually use it quite alot. It replaces a Melways, and its safe to keep my eyes off a Melways or my phone (google maps).

            - Dynaudio - I know it would sound better....but really $1300 worth of better?

            - Park Assist - I can park my car just fine, However having the side mirror aim down when in reverse is awesome and parking with no hands is never going to get boring while showing it off to the boys.

            - Sunroof - I dont have one at the moment, so I dont know what im missing, if at all. But for $1900 why not?
For me I order the following for mine:
Sunroof: I need the Sunroof, luv having it open with wind in my hair LOL!.. so if you like it get it i say its worth every penny!

Sat Nav - I need this for meetings and yeah its awesome and accurate and works in tunnels as it uses the speedo to know where you are.. so yes get it

Dyno AUdio: HELL NO!!! I have heard both the stock speakers and the dyno audio speakers with the same track and i swear to god NO significant Difference to warrant wat was it 1300 bucks or something stupid.. you can bang on a Amp and a sub for that much installed !

Park Assit: If you cant reverse park then yeah get it.. but for me instead of spending that 1500 doller option, i just got rear parking sensors just to be safe and also as the camera actually "pops" out of the boot handle when hitting reverse, i can just soo see that the little motor that pops it out will wear after a 2 or so years of use. So i reckon it aint worth it to be honest, unless your lazy and need a PC to park for you ... LOL

Adaptive Chassis control - Well of you buy the GTi with 18"s which is a must mind you.. the car looks lowered and from what i saw at the dealer there is hardly no clearence from the gaurd with those mags.. and plus with this control in sports mode the cars suspension and handling ROCKS and is very stiff. So id get this option if you like going sideways around corners >. BOOYEAH!!//

Bi Xenon: when i placed my deposit i first said no to the lights.. then i realised heck i will be keeping this car for a while plus who wants yellow crappy lights on a car thats worth over 50k.. plus if you like me who likes to take the car around town and drive it llike a go kart around corners you need those liights.. . so i gave in and said yes a week later in the order !

Oh and lastly i got leather seats... just to add abit of luxury when driving to work !! LOL !! and also you can heat them up in winter when its like 3 degrees in the morning !! HEHE

Bear in mind that extras won't be worth much when you come to sell the car. So option the stuff you're sure will add value for you.

To be honest, I'd go with the mantra that if you don't know whether you want it, you can live without it.

              My personal opinion:

ACC: The GTI is comfy enough for me, and handles great. I can put up with the odd bump just fine thanks. I've read reviews of the car without ACC and they're all glowing about the ride/handling. So I passed.

Xenons: Would be great, but I don't think they're $2k great and I don't like the look of them with the lights off. Regular lights still work fine, and the colour (yellow-ish) will at least match the driving lights and fogs. Thus, money better spent elsewhere.

Satnav: Completely unnecessary expense in Adelaide. The whole city's a grid anyway.

Dynaudio: Absolutely. I'll be using my iPod all the time, but 90% of my music is encoded at 320kb/s, and I love my music. If the Dynaudio doesn't sound good enough, I will spend extra cash to upgrade the system, add dynamat, etc etc. So, easy decision for me!

Park Assist: I can park myself, and don't need to show off. And while the mirror doesn't auto-dip, the mirror switch is easily accessible and you can do it yourself manually if you need to see the kerb. That's what I do with my Accord Euro now. Sure, it's annoying, but I'd rather be slightly bugged by that than pay $2k (or however much it is) and lose it all in depreciation. BTW: I don't believe this comes with the rear parking sensors in the MkVI - I read somewhere it only comes with the full Park Assist option.

Sunroof: I can't wait for the sunroof in my GTI. I think driving with the roof open is a fantastic experience, and I wouldn't be without it for $1900.

Bi-Xenon - They do look good and it is amazing the difference it makes at night but was not impressed enough to buy it

Sat Nav - base on hear/say alone so please correct me if i am wrong, going with a non built in GPS gives you better coverage and upgrade options.

Dyna - I was impressed enough with the standard audio that i did not bother, and when i need more upgrading is fun...

Park Assist - lol no comment

Sunroof - Same story as ACC unfortunately...
This pretty much sums up my thoughts to a tee.

The only compulsory options for me were DSG and 18s. I would have liked the xenons and thought hard about getting them for 2 weeks after getting the car but eventually made the decision that for $2000 I can do a lot of things... a new laptop, a new flat screen TV, a holiday etc etc. That's the only option I really wanted and compromised on, none of the others really interested me.

I personally think adding too many options is a waste of money when it comes to resale value. If I wanted to go nuts and fully load a GTI I'd rather spend the extra 5k and get a Golf R. Different strokes for different folks really. Go with what makes you happy for your budget.

At the end of the day none of these options really change the driving experience THAT much, the GTI is already an awesome car as standard.

I believe the speaker configuration is the same regardless. So, four bass/mid drivers, and four tweeters.

Dynaudio gives you better quality drivers, and a power-amp to drive the speakers. Not sure if the stock head unit is wired to do any amplification at all to be honest.

On plenty of music, at moderate volumes, it's unlikely you'll hear much difference between the setups. At louder volumes, or listening to dynamic music which requires greater detail and control from your speakers and greater power to drive them, then you'll pick the difference.

I've read posts by people who know audio and know what to listen for, who have posted about the difference in sound quality and suggested the option is worthwhile. If you can't pick it or aren't fussy, it's likely not worthwhile for you.

Ahh I had no idea that was even an option to begin with. What the price of having rear parking sensors, compared to having park assist?

Does the silhouet of the Golf appear on the headunit like it does with the Park Assist? or is it just beeping?

Get what you want Pauly! It'll be your car, you need to decide what is important to you!

It is interested to know that you're not interested in the R because of no 3 door. I'm 100% with you there.

Oh, and don't get your insurance through AAMI. They're for people with cars like Toyotas... ie, people that don't _really_ care about what they're driving. Go for an insurance company that gives you the choice of repairer and guarantees genuine and new parts (if available).

Dynaudio and the 18 inch wheel upgrade. Both seem value for money as far as options are concerned (compared to sourcing ex-vw)

RVC is a novelty thing isn't it

$2000 for bixenons seems overkill if 90% of driving is around town. Different matter if you do lots of country trips (ie to the snow etc)

From Mav's site (http://www.my-gti.com/1665), rear parking sensors are $612.43, plus whatever your dealer charges for installation I assume.

Not sure about the visual indication on the headunit.

As per my comments above, I don't think fitting this option gives you the auto-dipping passenger mirror on reverse. I've read that's reserved for the full Park Assist option on the MkVI.

I'm now thinking in want to have:

                            sat nav
                            adaptive chassis control
                            sunroof
                            reversing camera
                            media device interface
                            18" alloys
                            xenons

                            no leather
                            no dynaudio
                            no window tint stuff
maybe park assist...they way I'm thinking is that I'm already spending a ****e load on it anyway, what's an extra $1500?

I personally would drop the MDI and ACC.

The window tint can be haggled in for free and as it is a dealer accessory, they will replace it for the life of the vehicle.

If you need MDI, it too could be haggled in as it's a $180 option or something like that.

Yeah - the list looked good man. I'd personally never spend that much on a car and not get leather, but I understand your reasons for wanting to stay with the cloth!

Not getting tint from VW is also a great idea - just get that done afterwards. In fact, go to a company that can do both the window tint, and the Ventureshield Stoneguard, at the same time
