Picked up the R last night, didn't want to come home, just wanted to keep driving. Will post some pics once the rain stops in Melbourne and can give the car a good wash.

I've placed my order for my R and after making a few upgrades (like leather and 19's) I'm now satisfied with my choice. My question is around the delivery times at current (Jul 2011). I was expecting a 9 month delay (factory build) but when I spoke to the guy today it sounded like a much shorter turn-around time, even when coming from the factory. He mentioned checking Nadoc to see if a car with my specs was in the country or on a boat already and will get back to me with firmer details on expected delivery. It sounded promising though that my 9 month wait time was far, far longer than what I'll actually have to wait. Has anyone ordered a Golf R recently (factory build or not) and what wait times were you told?
I look forward to your response/s.
Cheers all.

Hey Rob, even though I got the car yesterday I have not had a chance to take her for a good drive. It might be worth waiting till Thursday so at least you only have to wait 1 day till the weekend where you can spend more time in the car. The traffic is also better on weekends so better for driving.
I have only driven in sports mode, I might try the normal mode in the morning to see how that happens. In sports mode I find the steering quite stiff compared to the bmw, especially for day to day driving around busy roads and shopping centre parking etc. Maybe just the adjustments period from drivin a rear wheel drive car.

If you have ACC the steering will lighten up in Comfort mode and the ride a little more compliant.

Sounds like the steering in 'sports' mode is heavier on the R over the GTI. Is it due to AWD?

Hey mate. Congrats on the order. I ordered an optioned R mid June and was told i'd see it in November at the latest. Still waiting on the build date to be confirmed. I was also told by the dealer (South Yara VW) that other customers who ordered their R's a little while before mine were originally looking at the same time frame but ended up being shortened by several months.
While I'm hopeful that I'll see it sooner, I certainly wouldn't be complaining if it were to arrive in November. The 9 months you've been told seems a fair way ahead and I can't help but think if they'd told me 9 months instead of 6, I might have been tempted to buy a Renault Sport RS250 instead. However, reading the posts of the many R owners who waited patiently (and sometimes impatiently) and have shared their stories of joy when they eventually received their cars has certainly been encouraging. Like anything exciting, the anticipation is an important part of the experience. Hard-earned victories are the sweetest after all.
Congratulations to all the happy R (and all other MK6) owners who have received their vehicles. And to those that whose vehicles exist only on paper, or as a rolling shell being assembled (we hope lovingly) by someone called Hans, or on a boat somewhere between Germany and where you are, or at your dealer having the pre-delivery song and dance performed in your honour: read the delivery day posts from the other members. They all say the same thing: The wait is well worth it.
Sorry, got a bit carried away there. Not sure whether that was for my benefit or everyone else's.

I don't think so, I will let the more mechanically minded explain how ACC works, more to do with the dampers as I understand but not sure why this affects the steering

Funniest post eva..
Look it is criminal how long they make you wait and lack of communication through the wait is never as good as it should be. I hate the statement that it is worth the wait however it is a great car and I have now had it for 2 months and done 3500 kays and I catch the train to work! You look for an excuse to drive it every opportunity you get. It is really fun on so many levels, performance , handling, quality, comfort and the integrated dash and entertainment system. It is the whole package that you just dont get in other cars
I hope the wait doesnt frustrate you too much.. look forward to hearing your first experience

Having the ACC/DCC in sport reduces the electric power steering assistance to give the driver more weight and feel in the steering. This is also the case in comfort and normal when over a certain speed (90?). It does this in both the GTI and R with DCC.

Why do so many people and motoring reviews say the weighting on the R on sports mode is heavy? I do not find the same setting on the GTI heavy at all. Try the Cooper S in sports mode, no that's heavy. Go Kart heavy.
