Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I purchased the car last week, (brand new) got a great deal on it as it was dealer stock, and 2010 plated.

It’s September 2010 built, which I'm told is a MY11 model??, 6 speed manual, I upgraded the stereo head unit to the touch screen, tinted the windows and got the MDI, colour is silver and I'm picking up the car tomorrow.

Now i was damn excited about it, it my first euro car as I've always owned Jap cars, mazda, mitsub, etc, but i spent last night checking out this forum and a few others and now i have a sinking feeling in my stomach...

After reading post and posts about failed engines, cars spending weeks and weeks in the service centre, super charger noises, I'm feeling like i just made a huge mistake, i know i should have researched the car prior to buying it , but sadly i didn't, besides the great reviews on car sites, i mean it won world car of the car in 2009 WTF.

Does anyone have any positive owner reviews on their 118tsi? or have i just F’ed up majorly.

    Thanks all
I've had my 118TSI for 12 months now (about 13000kms). I have the supercharger squeal problem. I don't really care. It's a great car. I still enjoy driving it. If I had to buy a car now, I'd still probably buy the same again... or a GTI..... or even R.

I did a lot of research when buying this car and I drove everything around the 2 Litre size/ or similar power. I know I made the right choice.

You will come to realise this too. Enjoy.

    • Thanks, yeah i test drove heaps of cars too, i loved the soild feel of the golf, sadly it doesn't have the sports package, so I'll have to upgrade the wheels soon, they just don't work for me lol

Supercharger noise i can deal with, it was the engine's blowing up, or losing power that got me worried.

That problem appears to be fixed.. but if it does happen then that's what warranty's are for!

        • Hey mate, you've made a good decision buying the TSi. 2 years now on mine with no probs at all. Sure I get the little squeal from the supercharger, buts that part of the experience. When you get round to some "fun" after you run it in, wind the window down and appreciate the supercharger whine when you give it to it! Its a noise the "turbo only" boys can't appreciate. Happy motoring!

She'll be right mate. Don't stress.

I did lots of research before ordering my GTD. I knew I wanted either a Japanese car or German car, as they are the most mechanically sound IMHO. I have owned Nissan and Subaru's in the past, but also like Mazda. I started checking out the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 and liked what I saw, but these were about 20k more than the Nissan/Subaru/Mazda offerings. I turned to the Top Gear website (and others) for car reviews. I found they were pretty harsh with all their reviews, so I got curiousas to what they considered to be a good car which wasn't over $200,000 and has at least 10 cylinders... enter stage left the Golf GTI. They had scored it 17/20. It seemed a great size for my needs, and was about $20,000 less than the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, so it certainly was appealing (to be able to get a vehicle with nice interior at a reasonable price). I know a guy who knows a guy who owns a GTI and he's really happy with it... I ran into some lady at the post office who owns a GTD and loves it... I checked out every youtube clip and website/magazine review I could find about the GTI/GTD/R and the all came back with very positive things to say about them. I was more interested in the GTD, due to the great fuel economy, put also having all the same great styling and features of the GTI. Even when they'd put the GTI up against the WRX or the Mazda 3 MPS, they'd choose the GTI as being the better choice, reason being that refinement and quality is better than slightly more acceleration. Fair point I guess. I ended up test driving the GTI twice, and then ordering the GTD.

So after all that, the next 5 weeks waiting will be terrible.
I guess it's natural to sometimes second-guess myself, but when I consider the research that went into it I think I've made the right choice.

                      • Just clocked the 500km mark and am absolutely impressed with the GTI engine. So smooooootttttthhhhh and refined. Incredible. S**** over my old Cooper S turbo.

So is it dangerous if I take out an R to compare? Wll I walk away regretting GTI purchase?

Admittley I haven't redlined my car yet. I feel bad. I will stick it out for the 1500km's.

                          • I've just hit the 300km mark, and i can agree with Mic. I've got no regrets, asides not optioning the RVC! Reversing visibility at night is piss poor especially with dark tint and the weak reverse light.

IMO the Dynaudio is quite good, a Sub isn't really necessary unless you crave the deep end bass. I like my bass so I'm now contemplating the Rockford Fosgate P3 Slim with matching Rockford 300-1 amp.
