Yeah - that's a fair enough point. But if the dealer is suggesting the service at 7500km and expecting the customer to pay, that's a different situation
I spoke to VW Melville who told me 15,000km is their recommended first service interval. However, having checked the condition of the oil and having spoken to a Certified Master Mechanic (CMM), I've decided to get the oil and filters changed, the car is currently slightly over 8000km. The CMM conveniently has his premises on the same road where I work. I've seen the cars outside his workshop, Porches, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, etc. so his claim to specialise in European cars seems well-founded. One thing he told me that impressed me was that I should be using BP Ultimate diesel in the Golf. Of course, I knew this, but he was unaware that it's still not available in WA. He told me that the standard grade of diesel can be contaminated with algae, and that could possibly have a detrimental effect on the injectors.
I agree about getting the oil and filter changed at half time in the first interval. While modern engines don't have the wear in rates as older engines, there's still likely to be metal chards running around the engine or hopefully sitting in the filter. Cheap insurance for piece of mind if you're wanting to keep the car long term IMO. But it's the same argument regarding which fuel do you run, each of personal opinion/preference.

Strangely enough I was playing around with the MFD the other day, and found the Service menu, and it reckons my first service isn't due until 30,000km... dream on baby!
A genuine VW oil filter costs ~ $25
I obtained VW spec 504/507 oil wholesale at ~$9 per litre (had to buy 20 litres to get that price)
Did the change myself at 8000ks
At $50 for an oil change, you must be getting something for nothing or not using VW spec oil or filter
My VW service today (15,000ks), cost, for oil and filter only (no other charges) was ~$120

Depends on the engine. My OEM filter is $18. If Supercheap is running a special I can get Edge Sport 5w30 (yes, it is VW compliant for 15,000km intervals) on special for $30. But I think my car might have the cheapest filter of all the VAG engines, so yes, $50 is a stretch.
M dealer charges me ~$17 for a filter. ~$75 for 504/507

I was going to book my Mk 6 Golf TDI in for its 7500Km service today, and was informed by the service department (VW Osbourne Park WA) that the oil is not changed on the 7500Km service.
Reason stated by the service department is the oil that comes with the car is different to the oil used during a service so to replace the oil at 7500Km would make the warranty invalid!
All they do is inspect and top up for $200, I can quiet easily do that myself.
Never heard this before, they just talked themselves out of a service.

Everything they said is true.
Strange they want to charge for what my dealer was willing to do for free

My 102TDI recently had its first service at 12 months — it hadn't reached 7500Km. The oil was changed to Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 synthetic ($62.70 + GST) and no one said anything about it invalidating the warranty (they seemed more interested in trying to sell me a set of wiper blades than anything else.)
Less than 7500 in 12months? That diesel will last forever.
However, I understand that depending on type of motor, eg, petrol or diesel, this also affects reccommended life of oil.
Obviously also depends on oil specification.
Is there some form of catylitic change in oil as it adsorbes verious byproducts from combustion etc, which is time dependant?
Salesman told me one advantage of 118TSI was it required less frequent service than 103TDI (TDI every 10,000K?)
And for my 2002 Corolla, according to Toyota, oil must be changed every 10,000K or 6 months, whichever comes first.

Salesman was wrong - both diesel & petrol are on the 15000/12 regime.
Yeah, the Jap cars can get a bit expensive for servicing if you tend to leave the car sitting in the garage.
