So you are telling me that if Person A and B own a Golf GTI. Since A lives in Brighton he will pay more than B who lives in Footscray?

That assumption is based on the fact that the likelyhood that yes more people insure in brighton for a greater amount.

    Doesnt make sense to me

Most people know insurance varies depending on location and whether it's garaged or not, as well as other factors.

I'm not telling you anything, what I'm asking you is that without you knowing the statistics for each suburb you are in no position to question the rationale behind the charging.

Insurance companies work on statistics (from claims, predictions and so forth) and this is how they come up with their prices.

That assumption is based on the fact that the likelyhood that yes more people insure in brighton for a greater amount.
I never said that and never made any assumptions.

        Doesnt make sense to me
Easy, start up your own insurance company and offer cheaper rates based on the way you see it and come back in 12 months time and let us know how it works

The insurance companies generally know what they are doing and if most insurance companies are charging more for one suburb than another it's pretty clear that they are exposed to more risk in that suburb and charge accordingly.

I just bought mine, because i'm under 25 - although fully licenced with no accidents, etc. Cheapest i could get was $1375 from GIO with $1000 excess and windscreen cover. NRMA was 2200, AAMI 3000 :O. and half the places i called wouldn't touch me with a 10ft pole because of the age and turbo/supercharger. hope you get a better deal than me despite the P's! Youi's quote wasn't too bad, but couldn't beat GIO

I am with NRMA at 900 for the GTI - under 25 drivers included with STD excess.

My location put my quote up by $75 as i live in an "inner city" area. Thus more traffic?!?

Do not go with AAMI they are hell to deal with and that is from personal experience and issues friends have been having as well.

Suncorp and Alliance are my most recommended but you will pay for them. And they would not insure me as i was under 30 and have a turbo.

i just did an online quote with AAMI,

aged 22, full license, and no accident.

                        for mk6 gti

                        quoted $793 (excess is 550 + 450 for under age of 25)

i'm quite surprised that it's so cheap. i payed 3 times the amount on my last car xD

Guys - I'm sorry, but you're INSANE to go for AAMI with a car like a Golf, especially a GTI.

Also, double check the fine print with AAMI. They claim to insure cars on 'market' or 'agreed' value - but there is usually an upper limit. When I had my Toyota I was with AAMI. When I went to go for a VW Golf GTI, just for giggles I decided to get a quote from AAMI - they wouldn't even cover anywhere near the purchase price for the car - not even the RRP (without the onroads etc).

ANd that's before you need to make a claim and have a repair done - avoid AAMI at all costs.

Does that include Just Car Insurance too? from memory they are owned by AAMI?

                              Thats a suprise.

Ive got agreed value for the first 2 years of the car with AAMI, that value is the price i paid for the car,

yeah - Just Car are terrible too!

It has been a while since I contacted them. But seriously... I called AAMI cause they were who I was currently with. I'd already had quotes from NRMA, QBE, Allianz and GIO etc. AAMI basically said they'll insure the car with a premium of x, but they'll only insure it up to a value of $45k (or something like that). But I was like, um, the car is costing $56k to purchase! And they basically said that their systems tell them the maximum value of a car and they can't go higher.
I then asked them about a Mini Cooper S Chilli - and their maximum didn't even cover the RRP of the car, let alone with any options or onroads.

Then after a 15 minute call they went - oh wait, you're under 30, you'll have to call Just Car.

I called them, and went through the same thing - they wouldn't insure the entire value of the car. Base spec with no options maybe, but not what I was wanting to get.

So anyway - between that and the fact that you are heavily restricted to who you can have your car repaired through, and their prefered repairers (at least in my area) are not the most reputable of places, plus the fact that they don't guarantee genuine or even new parts, you are far better to seek someone else than AAMI.

Don't get me wrong - with my Toyota I was very happy with AAMI. Their customer service was good, and price was competitive, and they did insure the entire value of that car. I even had to get my car repaired and managed to get the repairer of MY choice because AAMI's prefered repairer in my area was so bodgy that their quote missed out a few things in order to have the 'lowest price' and I pulled up AAMI on that during their assessment which meant they had to let me take it to my repairer even though my repairer was several thousand more (as I had followed their rules and therefore had them on a technicality). But I also had to pay to have the quote done at my repairer (as many non-AAMI certified repairers will do, because they are sick of AAMI customers getting quotes which they'll rarely get business from) and I ran the risk of losing that payment.

It's just not worth it for a car with the quality of a VW.
