One thing to consider when choosing an insurance company, do they have a reputation for honoring claims within a reasonable time. Some companies do their best to avoid paying out on claims. I know this as my wife use to work on insurance litigation cases.

When I arranged insurance, the difference in cost for "no drivers under 25' and for "drivers under 25" was only $4/mth. Although we could not think of anyone under 25 that would drive our car, we pay the extra $4 anyway.

We went through Bank SA which is underwritten by CGU. Cost $54/mth.

Live in a really nice suburb in melbourne, in terms of property value and safety (imho),.

Unfortunately a really nice suburb in Melbourne in terms of property value will often mean to Thieves that there is bound to be many nice cars around to steal....

I dont see how that makes sense.

When you have a nice suburb in terms of location/value etc there is less crime in the area. So a suburb like Brighton will have less crime than a suburb in the west like Footscray (or if you are in sydney a suburb like Redfern).

Also a "nice suburb" will mean that the cars are expensive and thus harder to steal/re-sell parts etc.

So your basically saying that a poor suburb will provide better insurance cause thieves dont operate there.

From an insurance perspective I do know for a fact that the suburb plays a big part, and a suburb like Brighton is less of a risk than a lower class suburb.

I dont mean to sound like I am having a go at you.

@Timmy - but the insurance company sees is the way Corey explained it. They see it that those from West Footscray, Frankston will go to suburbs like Brighton and Toorak to steal things as they have nicer things. I.e, thieves won't go to frankston to steal. Well when my mates moved from frankston to Brighton beach and their insurance premium went up, that was th explaination given. Location plays a big part of insurance premiums.

You're a male under 25, so you can expect ridiculous premiums, regardless of your accident history. In fact, it seems that many insurers are tightening up further these days and don't really drop the premiums for guys until the main driver approaches 30.

A couple of years ago, when in my late twenties, I was living with a girl my age who drove a DC5 Honda Integra, with virtually identical agreed and market value to my CL9 Honda Euro. Same registered address, same no-accident-history, same insurer between us. And I paid $300 p/a more.

The highest crime rates are recorded for Frankston and Footscray (and similar suburbs). This particular to cars. I also recall RACV posting results of the suburbs with the highest vehicle theft/break ins/etc. Footscary, St Albans, Frankston and similar were all in the top list.

So you are basicaly saying if person A had a car exactly identical to person B and Person A lived in Footscray and B lived in Brighton, A would have a cheaper policy. Youve got to be joking?

I dont really disagree with my policy ( i know under 25 etc pay more). I was suprised with the massive gap between myself and Coreying. Considering he had also made a claim and a year younger.

I didn't post my insurance premium and I'm definitely not a year younger than you....

I just said that insurance companies will structure their pricing based pm what they feel are the bad suburbs for theft. This structuring can be based on THEIR own claims etc. Just because other suburbs have a higher car theft rate according to the RACV, doesn't mean that your suburb's car theft (and/or accident rate) doesn't cost your insurance company much more in $ value, hence you have a higher premium.

What is the average value of a car claim in Footscray versus Brighton?

Are there more claims in Footscray or Brighton?

How many people (%) insure their car in Footscray versus Brighton?

What is the average insured amount in Footscray versus Brighton?

just wondering if the current NRMA advertising that states "15% off for cars less than x old" applies to existing customers? May have to call and see.
