Polo GTI better to 90/118 TSIs

IMO, the Polo has plenty of driver / passenger space. I'm not a small guy (6'1", about 100kgs) and I easily and very comfortably fit into the current Polo.

I read somewhere (wish I could remember where, as I hate making unsubstantiated claims) that the new Polo is about the same size as the Mk II Golf. I haven't checked the figures myself (yet), but it would be interesting if true.

Actually the current Polo is the same size as the MK2 Golf, the new 1 is supposed to be MK3 size .....

weird how cars just always have to keep getting bigger... bugs me a bit.

anyway, i often thought that the polo seemed to be about old golf size, but definately taller towards the rear, as is common in new small cars.

You can't compare a "mainstream" Golf to the sporty Polo. Mainly because the Golf is designed to be comfortable, safe, economical, practicle and value for money with performance being a LONG way down the list.

The Polo GTI is about getting the best handling, performance and driver experience out of a little car.

And they're two COMPLETELY different markets. I seriously doubt you'd get much more than a shrug if you told a 118TSI Golf owner that a Polo GTI was a better car. Well, maybe a laugh. People buy a car that suits their individual needs.

I saw this article and was quite interested with the new Polo GTI specs. I do own a 118 TSI, really love it but just tempted when I saw better specs on the GTI (in terms of power/acceleration/ stability cntrl etc)

Can't really compare a Polo GTI to 118TSI Golf. Polo GTI is the highest level in its class so you would have to compare it to either a Golf GTI or R20 to be fair.

i find it interesting that power is boosted to 132kw and it uses 7DSG yet magically it puts out 249nm of torque. Is it possible to really boost power that much without a proportionate increase in torque?

I actually suspect marketing want it to appear that way but reality would be actual torque is higher.

As to whether polo gti is better comes down to priorities ie if you value power to weight ratio in stock form or need a little extra space.

I personally do carry 3 other adults at times on long driver so golf is for me.

The polo gti goes very quick for the price and will shred falcodores with those awesome looking daytime lights. Great q car that wont attract too much attention if thats what you value most.

It definitely is guys.... for example, there are various aftermarket tuners, like Oettinger, that have a different tune for the manual vs DSG cars, and they limit the torque on the DSG cars to a lower figure whilst still providing the same peak kw figures.

So its better to compare a 35K car to a 50K car? Personally when I buy a car, I compare the car against other cars that cost a similar amount. Why would you compare the Polo GTI to the R20? To me thats like comparing an STI to an AMG...

The Polo is not trying to compete with the Golf, they are different cars and as we can see by the number of people commenting here, internal space and storage is a definite differentiator. As for build quality, performance, etc, well these variables are upto VW to decide what they think the market wants and what the price point is.

The likely Polo R (next year maybe) may be a let down or the car I upgrade to... Time will tell.

I have a 07 Polo GTI, and A Golf GTI arriving in May.

I would have to say if the new Polo was avaliable when i ordered my golf, i probably would have bought it instead. I dont need the space, and 15,000 less for the same speed is awesome. Not to mention potentially 1000km on a 40l tank

Polo R will be interesting, im thinking 150kw and 4WD

I'll be taking a good look at the Polo GTI next year and will be interested to hear details of the Polo R as they emerge. Both as possible trades for my 118TSI depending on how good they are.

I am 192 cm and 100kg. I fit in my Peugeot 206GTi just fine. There is no room behind me for anyone with legs. My boys have grown up and gone away, so this isn't a problem for me.

If we are going on a trip, we take my wife's 118TSI.

There was a review on GoAuto of the Golf GTI that concluded (paraphrased) If I was getting one car, it would be the Golf GTI, if it was a second car, a Renaultsport Clio or similar.

I intend keeping my Peugeot for 3 years or so. Going on what appears will be around at the time, I would consider a Megane 250, Clio 200, Polo R or GTI, Golf R or GTI ( t would have to have sharper steering feel) or Honda CRZ Type R.
