Polo GTI better to 90/118 TSIs

Hey just read the article in SMH about the new Polo GTI
Looks like it is better option to Golf 118TSIs. The prices are not yet confirmed, but if VW sitcks with the current price (26990) like they did for Golfs, I reckon it is better to get the GTI version than Golf 90/118 variants. More power, less fuel, overall looks good!

Too bad about the lack of interior room and boot space.
Also the GTI should have stiffer suspsnesion which may not be what people are after.

And you can still get a manual in the golf, there is no mention of a manual transmission for the polo GTI.


It is porbably comparable if you only ever have 2 or 3 people in the car and don't care about stiff suspension though.

In comparing the polo GTI to the 118TSI, the Golf will always have the space and practicality that goes with that on its side.

That being said, i recon there'd be strong sales for the Polo GTI. Those who can't quite afford the 118 and want performace, this is the car for them. kw and nm numbers are pretty impressive and with an ECU remap, it would fly... esp it being only 1184kg's.

Daytime running lights are a nice touch too... I am a fan

It looks great, if I didn't need the extra space of the Golf, I'd definately go for the Polo GTI.

Exactly. As the guys above have already said, the Polo GTI is a smaller car than the Golf in even way. It's also aimed at different markets - it's a hot hatch vs a practical comfortable hatch.

Pricing hasn't been announced for the Polo GTI yet.
But lets think this through a bit.
$26,990 Polo GTI
$2,500 DSG
$2,000 Optional Xenon with DRL
$1,900 Sunroof
$500 PDC Rear
$33,890 for the car pictured (not including any interior options like the sat nav etc). Add your dealer delivery, onroads and taxes, and you'd be looking at around $37,750

Also keep in mind that the 90/118TSI is a 5 dr car. So that'd add another $1500 ($1550 with taxes) to the onroad making the car pictured but in 5 door form to be comparable to the Golf worth ~$39300

So I'm not sure anyone would be jumping ship from a 90/118TSI Golf to a new Polo GTI unless they were specifically in the market for a compact hot-hatch.

I'd buy the Polo GTI anyday over a Golf TSI if only it came in 5 doors.

Boot space is only 50l less and the GTI's typically comes with features that is not on the regular models. Sport Suspension, XDS, alarm system, tyre pressure sensing, more power, better looks etc etc..... + add in 150kg less weight and it becomes a real drivers car.

And how is that 6.9s 0-100km/h ..... and who said the Polo would never be allowed to match the Golf for performance.

Very true Corey, however the pictured car does give you the ability to reduce the cost of the car by ~$4400 + taxes if you wish to, which could get more people thinking, only if, like you said, they wanted a compact hot hatch. and if price is your main limitation, then $34k vs. $39k is very tempting.

You can't compare a "mainstream" Golf to the sporty Polo. Mainly because the Golf is designed to be comfortable, safe, economical, practicle and value for money with performance being a LONG way down the list.

The Polo GTI is about getting the best handling, performance and driver experience out of a little car.

And they're two COMPLETELY different markets. I seriously doubt you'd get much more than a shrug if you told a 118TSI Golf owner that a Polo GTI was a better car. Well, maybe a laugh. People buy a car that suits their individual needs.

I suspect the Polo GTI in DSG form wouldn't be too popular with people wanting to chip their cars for performance improvement - beyond a stage 1 anyway - as (I assume) it comes with the 7-speed dry-clutch unit that's rated to 250Nm. I'd be concerned about putting a lot of torque (say 300Nm+) through that on a regular basis. A manual would be the go there. Or a Golf GTI, but as has been mentioned, that car competes in a very different segment.

I also expect the Golf 118TSI will have a higher standard of build quality, materials, fit and finish to the Polo - but I'm happy to be corrected; I've not read anything about the latest Polo in that regard.

IMO, the Polo has plenty of driver / passenger space. I'm not a small guy (6'1", about 100kgs) and I easily and very comfortably fit into the current Polo.

The 5 door GTI was not brought to Australia in the current model, wait and see.

The boot is not big, but if the seats fold well, it will be interesting.

I'm not sure about the handling (we will have to wait and see). The current GTI is far from rigid handling at stock.

Be aware, support for the Polo is lean. There are almost no available aftermarket parts in Australia, almost everything is bought from the UK. Where there are overlaps with the Seat equivalent and Mk4 GTI, some parts can be shared.

For me no manual = no sale.

How's the legroom for a passenger sitting immediately behind you? When I test drove the Golf, my wife sat behind me and said there was plenty of leg room. For the record, I'm 1.8m and approx 85kg.

I could not say for sure, I don't carry people in the rear often. I know I've sat in the back and had plenty of head room.

Uh, ok. Don't think the Polo is aimed at the family market.
I'm not short, I'd think someone a bit taller (say 6'3") would still be comfortable.

Yeah mate, I've been in one. Had a loan of one for a week. My knees where up against the dash and it felt like i was a tin can. That's just my opinion and I wound never buy one. You can't compare a Polo to a Golf.

Yeah, I've a 6'3" mate who weighs about 110 and he had issues getting into the drivers seat of my Polo GTI
