'I can't believe everyone got so uptight over an obviously throw-away line from Nic... '
Thanks Anthony, Simon and Dopey, (and others who realised that what I wrote was indeed a throwaway line).
Those taking my comment (which I believed to be an obvious stir), so seriously do indeed need to lighten up. You're holding on too tight!
Manual for me is just the preferred option - I don't seriously believe that anyone who chooses DSG over manual does so because they can't manage a clutch.....
It's nice to have a bit of fun now and then guys - life's too short!
on the original topic I think that also the model you are buying, is important, if it is sports model like the GTI or if its one the other models.
I spent a day driving around Sydney traffic in a 90TSi with a 7 speed dsg and thought the performance from a 1.4l motor was impressive when coupled with the dsg. As a manual, you would spend a fair bit of time rowing your way through the gearbox, to get the same performance the DSG gave.
If I was buying, a 90Tsi I would go the dsg without question. In the GTI the manual is the better fit, for my tastes. In traffic, a dsg equipped GTI would be faster in stop start driving, just because I don't like to give my clutch a hard time, plus it doesn't take many revs to spin the Bridgestones.
and from what I read, the GTI with DSG has a better tone.
"You'll need the $2500 dual-clutch (DSG) gearbox to treat your eardrums to the full exhaust-popping show that accompanies the auto's rapid up-shifts, though the transmission's tendency to hesitate off the line makes the slick six-speed manual easier to live with around town.- SMH Drive"

But do remember that some of these unfortunate souls can only drive on a licence restricted to automatic transmission, and reminders of their monopedal abilities can only cause them pain.
[Perhaps I should have said:
Some of these DSGeres are unfortunate enough to only be able to drive on a restricted licence ... (as they are not all "unfortunate".]

To be fair though driving most small cars in town is not a chore as generally clutches are light and gearboxes are easy to use - I certainly would be happy with either... If I was going for the 118TSI I probably would actually have chosen the manual box...
Remember people - we're all here because we like VWs transmission choice is a side issue...

hmm MT vs DSG... i actually haven't had an opportunity to drive a MT Golf... at the moment i'm not missing not having a MT car, previously i liked manual cars because Auto is so sluggish, but with the DSG gearbox, that is not a problem.

+1 and unlike most I have both transmissions to use (6sp MT in Cooper S Chilli and DSG in both R36 and soon to arrive Gti)
I was a staunchly "manual only" driver because autos suck (try the Subaru sludgomatic in the Gt or RB, it's the worst gearbox ever!). the DSG doesn't suck and it's better than any auto I've had the misfortune to drive.
Both have their merits and their place but the harsh reality for manual drivers is that it will one day be the option, not the default.

Depends on the Auto - the autos in highend Jags, BMW and Mercs are all reported to be very responsive and all are torque converter based. The reason is that a torque converter based auto give a much smoother shift in most conditions compared to a DSG (or similar) gearbox.

Yes, but by all accounts, any lack of smoothness is more than made up for by the convenience of being able to just sit there while the control unit changes gears for you and/or being able to change gears without having to raise one's left leg off the footrest to depress and release a manual clutch.

Yes, but don't forget that high-end Jags, BMWs and Mercs all have engines producing bucket-loads of power and torque... A traditional auto trans in a more modestly powered Golf would no doubt dull the driving experience...
i was reading the wheels gti special, i picked up from a VW dealer.
they quoted that in aus 75% of GTI drivers bought the DSG but only 30% globally opt for the DSG
