So they only reduced prices on base models and paint? What about all other expensive options.. They are all 'imported' as well.
Sorry, have I missed something where it was stated that this price drop had anything to do with import duties or the strength of the Australian dollar ?

It's the car import tariff reduction from 10% to 5% right. I remember reading an article saying the option list should be trimmed as well. It also mentioned manufacturer like Honda, whose cars are mainly made in Thailand, does not benefit from this reduction. Because Australia and Thailand already had free trade agreement.(which i assume means no tariff?) Jeez, I just realised all the Honda buyers have been ripped off!

Dave8878, the original poster, did not say that this price reduction was due to the drop in import duty. In addition, if it was, then this should have been in affect since Jan 1st, not now in February.
I'm just concerned that people are 'assuming' that this is due to the import tarriff reduction.

Well, here's the first sentence of the press release from VW Aus:

"Volkswagen has updated pricing following a duty drop by the Federal Government which will come into effect on 1st February 2010."

It's probably worth pointing out that Volkswagen is under no obligation to pass on the saving inherited by the tariff reduction, therefore the fact these reductions have been announced one month after the tariffs were cut could simply be due to the PR dept having some time off over xmas, haha.

Aaah - thanks Lima. I did look on the VW website, but they hadn't updated it with anything at the time.

                No probs.

When you read that sentence from VW it's not really the best structured piece of prose.

I believe either BMW or MB have not passed on any reduction, citing no increase to general pricing for 24 months.

They will however add more standard features.

The sales manager at Werribee Volkswagen told me over the phone today that they would pass on any change in pricing (I have a 118TSI on order).

Had a phone call from my dealer today saying my Golf due in 2 weeks time will be re-invoiced to reflect the Feb 1st pricing.

He said any vehicle invoiced from Volkswagen Australia from 1st Feb have the price reduction, in that the dealer will receive the vehicle at a reduced cost but it is up to the dealer if they pass this to buyers.

Also said some dealers may offer the dollar value in parts which if you know the mark up is a rip off to the buyer.

Is there a copy of this press release on the net somewhere? I can't find anything on VW Australia's website.

                        Thanks.

There's not much more to it...

"Volkswagen Updates Pricing Effective 1 February 2010

Volkswagen has updated pricing following a duty drop by the Federal Government which will come into effect on 1st February 2010.

The model price changes as well as option price changes in the Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles range are outlined below:"

                            Thanks Lima,

I was mostly looking for something official to add more weight to requesting the reduction from my order.

I don't think you'll need that much weight as such.. From what's posted here, just about all the dealers will be passing on the price reduction on the specified models.
When I brought this up with my dealer to get the $200 for the GTI's, I just mentioned that I had heard that met.paint was reduced and will I be getting the discount (although the tone was more a statement than a question).. He responded with a quick yes...

Just got a call from my dealer. She doesn't want to pass on my $1000 for my TSI. I am waiting for their sales manager to call me now! Ready for the fight!
