I think the Golf R has bit too much hype to it. It won't turn out as people imagine it to be especially stock... if you are going to tune it, that is a different story.
The Golf R difference to the Mk5 R32, would be as much as Mk5gti to Mk6 gti. Minimal.
i'm sure people will list out all the differences to prove me wrong, just like people who bought the mk6, but at the end of the day, it is more a facelift than a new car.
This is exactly what VW does... mk1 -> Mk2 minimal differences with mk1 actually better. then there was a big change when the mk3 came out... and mk3 -> mk4, another facelift and minor changes... then cycle continues mk5 huge changes and mk5 ->6 minor changes once again.
People who just wait for the mk7 but... from the history trend, it might be another 6 years lol
