There is no difference between the stance of the 5 door and 3 door models - so I guess this is one of those visual illusion things
Cant agree....Maybe post up some pics with side on profiles 5 door for me

The 'stance' as in the ride height is identical (according to VW). As is the roof line (again according to VW). Although VW doesn't publish specs on the 'shoulder line' that also visually looks the same (as it starts at the same place on the headlights and ends at the same place on the rear tail lights).

As for posting pictures of side on between the 5 door and 3 door models, that is nigh on impossible to find the two pictures from the side at the same angle, let alone same car or colour etc. But here is about as close as I could find:

As you can see (apart from slight difference in ride height as they're different models) the main differences between the 3 and 5 door models are:
Length of front door is longer on 3 dr model
Less lines on the 3 dr model due to deletion of rear door, and a single glass panel for rear side windows instead of two.
The rear side window on the 3 dr model is more curved, especially along the bottom where it 'sweeps up' to the where 'elbow' would be in the 5 door's rear edge of the window creating a wider 'shoulder' between the window lower edge and the shoulder line which runs along the entire side.

To me, the only thing which could give any impression of change of stance would be the 3 doors sweeping lower edge on the rear window which would give the 3 door the more 'aggressive looking stance' due to the wider shoulder line...

        • Just an update.

5 R20's are in the Country as we speak.

          • Those pics above aren't really similar enough to compare and the R obviously looks better, better angle too.

I think that rear quarter panel on the 5dr looks like the classic golf lines but either are ok depending on what you need.

If that's the case, then the journo's should have them on the road within a week or two perhaps?

Surely if they're on the road pricing will be announced!. This is good news.

Like many other people, 5dr only = cancelled order. Won't buy a diff VW either even though I like the GTI, I want an R. Won't settle for less. I don't like 5dr in the MK6, rear doesn't look right to me. MK5 did though.

Yeah they're aren't similar enough, but I couldn't find anything better. The GTI angle is better for what we were discussing though - but couldnt find one that 'square on' of a 3 door.

But my main point was to which I was replying, taking out bias in it, there is no difference in 'stance' between a 3dr and 5dr model, they're identical in dimensions and ride heights, the only differences are what I listed.

There were five door MkIV Rs in Europe (maybe Japan too not sure). Much rarer than the 3 door though.

                      • I like how they keep calling it an all-rounder, makes it sound like a POS. Perhaps it's because it doesn't have the fun factor or sound of the R32..

A set of coilovers + sway bars would certainly sharpen up the handling.

                        • "Swiss-based tuning firm Sportec, has announced the launch of a new Stage One ECU package for the Volkswagen Golf R hot hatch. In stock form, the Golf R's 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivers 267bhp and 258 lb-ft (354Nm) of torque. With the software upgrade, output is bumped up to 300bhp at 6000rpm and 321lb.ft (440Nm) of torque at 2750 rpm.

As a result, Sportec claims that the Golf R's 0-100 kmh (0-62mph) acceleration time is reduced from 5.7 to 5.3 seconds, with the top speed increasing to 160mph or 265 km/h. The ECU package is suitable for both six speed manual and DSG dual-clutch transmission versions of the Golf R."

Power gains aren't massive, but increase in torque is significant, as are the claimed times/top speed.

                          • By comparison, the APR Stage 1 which has been out for months (years?) now for the engine in the R puts out 240kw and 435Nm of torque. So it probably is a touch quicker. 0 to 100 in the DSG would probably be 5 seconds flat.
