  • I'd prefer to see the 3DR R, 5DR R and Sirocco.. however I have a feeling itll be just the 5DR R and Sirocco which sucks.

    • I'm worried now that they'll also get rid of the 3 dr GTI.
I mean, the R32 and now the R is their top of the line hot hatch. Where as the GTI was half way between 'family hatch' and outright 'hot hatch'. So the ratio of 5 door to 3 door GTI's is far higher than that on the R32.
So if they're so happy to get rid of the 3 door on the R, how long until it's not available on the GTI either.

      • I'd be happy with a 5dr R considering I have one now.. Doesn't change the overall package to the extent i wouldn't get one etc.

Otherwise a Megane RS 250 cup could be the go if you want a proper hot hatch, a 135i or S3 would be an obvious choice too if you can extend the budget.

        • Yeah - my budget certainly extends to the S3 (and the 135i if I didn't get as many options as I'd have in the R). I very much prefer the Golf compared to the A3/S3 though, otherwise I'd have already gone out and bought an S3.

          • spoke to a dealer on the wkend and was told realisitcally it will be available in august.. which really sucks for me as iam needing to upgrade by May-ish...
not sure if i should go out looking for a new r32 (if theres anyleft in stock) or wait for a r20...

            • There are no R32's listed as 'brand new' on Carsales.com.au for NSW - but there are 3 in VIC and 1 in QLD. There could be others though - but if you want an R32 new, get on it quick smart

              • August? lol no way I am waiting that long for an R.

With the press R's here already, I'd have expected the first shipment to arrive much earlier than August.

                • August is a bit of a joke, it would almost be worth waiting for an MY11 by that stage, as the plate would almost be a year old already.

S3 may not be a bad option, or just stick with the GTI for a few years till you know at least how good/bad the R20 will be and make the decision after the hype dies down and when you can test drive it (at least that's what i'm thinking).

                  • I'll be waiting for further information until the time of delivery of the GTI, but if August really is true, then its no R for me.

I'd rather keep the GTI for 3 years and see what's next. Second hand TT-RS or RS5 most likely.

I won't be either. I need a car by July at the absolute latest. I'm not waiting until then only to find out I can only have a 5 door and after August.

Like the others, my budget can goto an S3 and 135 but I don't think they offer as much car for the money. Plus the negatives. S3 3dr looks rather dated, but no DSG so scratch that and I still find something wrong about the 135 body style.

Annoying part is, around the same money the choices aren't that great. Anything japanese is going to be fast and fun but they're average places to be when your sitting in the drivers seat. And some just look like 12yo wet dreams...ie Evo X.

                        Yeah - that's what's upsetting me.
My MKV GTI was 3 door, and my Polo GTI was 3 door... my car before them was also 3 door (haven't driven a 5 door in a decade or so).
Now I'm also hearing that the new Polo GTI will ONLY be in 5 door as well! I mean wtf Volkswagen, replace a car which has ONLY been 3 door with one that is ONLY available as a 5 door?

Why are VW so happy to be giving away their EXISTING customers?!

yeah ur right... and according to the dealer i spoke to.. the only new R32's available are directly from VW australia.. ie showcase cars (or whatever the actual name for them are)... didnt get to ask the exact manufactured date (which would be nice to know)... and pretty much standard (in terms of options)...

he mentioned july being release date etc.. but by time the Oz gets some delivery, and then they (the actual dealership) get any in stock, other time wasting issues etc etc... it looks more like august.. then there's the issue of availability with the actual spec's you're after for the R20...(eg manual vs DSG, 3dr vs 5dr etc).... apparently he's already received deposits for the R20's..... which i find funny because i asked for an indication on sales price and he couldn't give a clear answer on that....not his fault mind you.. but as a customer.. thats a big step laying down a deposit without knowing the actual cost of the car!... i guess some people just have spare money to spend..

                          • I've emailed Karl and cc'd Anke. Doubt I'll get anything but an automated response though.

It is a hard concept to do initially but it depends on your situation. I hate buying anything without a negotiation, its in the blood but with a pre-order you can't. In my case, I have a lease expiring around June/July so I need a car. If I was to wait for a time when I can negotiate a price I still have to find a car in the meantime which will cost money and not be what I want to be driving. The bonus of being an early adopter might appeal to some but I couldn't care less about that part.

Yeah - I emailed Karl. Got an out of office with his mobile number!
I hope I get an actual reply though. Depending what it is, I might then email Anke to enquire why she is giving away existing VW customers to other brands when she's apparently here to expand the customer base.

                              • Just finished my lease in january and decided to keep the car until say Decemberish, waiting for the R. Don't want to be an early adopter, me. Also, being pressed to buy because you need something to drive is not a good position to be in as a buyer...
I've got plenty of time to look around and to evaluate the R properly. Who knows, maybe Ford will finally decide to bring over the hot hatches bad boy, too
