  • I used to get a film on the front windscreen in Singapore and IMHO it was very noticeable driving in the sun when it was removed.

You could install a clear tint that just offers protection against UV etc and it's unlikely it would be picked up on.

The product looks interesting - New Legal, Clear Heat-Blocking Front Windshield Film! | T&T Tinting Specialists, Inc.

After decades of hearing our customers plea for a window film that we could legally install on their front windshields, T&T Tinting Specialists now has "AIR Blue - Windshield Heat Blocker", a virtually clear film by Llumar that reduces an incredible 43% of the sun's heat and 99.9% of the UV Rays!

This new, super High-Tech "Nano-Ceramic" film is virtually clear, as it meters at 80% VLT. As long as the cumulative Visible Light Transmission (VLT) of your windshield and sample of the film that we temporarily adhere to your windshield for testing does not fall below 70%, it complies with the Federal Standard (FMVSS-205) that governs the front windshield. We will meter every windshield before and after installation to certify it conforms. (Vehicles that fail the meter test cannot be done.)

So, whether you currently have the sides and back windows of your vehicle tinted or not, now is the time to get AIR Blue installed on your vehicle's front windshield to cut the heat from the largest piece of glass on your vehicle!

      • Any tint installer who installs <35% tint (as that's already "illegal") will do your windscreen if you ask them to... however...

One of the issues with installing tint on the windscreen (apart from legalities) is all that water running down the front of the dash during the installation... It's an area of the car where car manufacturers are not typically concerned about water proofing. So in speaking personally with a few tint installers who have tinted windscreens, they say that it's a big concern for them with modern cars as they have each had a few people with "random electrical issues" for a few days afterwards. Stereo's which wouldn't turn on, or dash lights going weird etc. Being that they were telling me things their customers had told them and stuff, it's 2nd or 3rd hand information, but take it for what it's worth. But when I asked if they'd do my car, they said no... which didn't upset me, cause I didn't want it, was just curious

        • I've had it installed on my R35 and if top gear is to be believed, that's a Playstation on wheels and it's worked fine since.

Ps Corey I did hear that from tintacar as well.

          • Yeah... their view was that whilst it didn't happen to everyone, it would randomly occur. Even if they'd done one model of car multiple times before, they'd then get one where they had problems immediately after. Obviously, they have no idea if the person has electrical problems 3 years down the road. So anyway... I just mention that because it is a potential risk that you might not think of before getting that done. Door cavities are meant to cope with water going down them. Dashboards are not

            • I'm going to get mine tinted on Saturday after calling around so long ago.

I'm going to Tint-a-car in North Melbourne, and going to get F1 for the front and clear UV tint for the rear windows! Hopefully everything will be ok after reading the horror stories with the other tinters!

              • Hi m_f,

Can you please post some pics of how the F1 looks on the car once it is done. I am still deciding where to get my car tinted. Would have been much easier if the Golf R did not have tinted glass on the rear, could easily get any tint you want then all round.

No problems. But might have to wait until the weekend after that when I get a bit more time. I'm also intending to give my car a proper wash that weekend!

                    • Looks nice dieterbohlen. Thanks for sharing that. I am more wondering how the F1 matches to the Golf R factory tint.

                      • It looks to "carbon" / grey to match. Although it's very difficult to tell because none of us are using professional equipment with an agreed to calibration profile!

                        • Hi all,

I'm keen on getting my car tinted, I called ARMA tinting in Essendon and spoke to a guy with a very thick Russian accent. I asked him if he had any experience with VW's and he claims that they do them for Camberwell VW and Essendon. Also when I asked him if they remove the door trims, he said no.

In the end he said it would be $250 for the Sonic tint all round. Anyone had any experience with ARMA tinting and/or Sonic tint? Cheers

Hi! I've replied to your PM.

When I tinted my car a few weeks back, the person at tint-at-car also said the door trims did not have to be removed!

I've actually seen how it's done in person. The door trim (as in the "door card") itself doesn't need to be removed. When VW designed the MK6 the changed it so that the "inside window seal" and its holder can be "lifted" to allow the window tinter to push their "spatular tool" and the lower end of the window tint down in the gap.

Having said this, it wouldn't surprise me if there are tinters out there who don't know this feature and still attempt to remove the door trim...

                              • I am getting my R tinted tomorrow by Rob as soon as I pick up the car.
He was actually fully booked out on Friday but it seems that he's got a booking cancelled from someone and he is coming to my place to do it tomorrow afternoon.

Does Rob also remove the door trims?
I doubt that Rob will remove the door trims.
