He means most small coupes aren't big enough for the driver to sit in the optimal position if they have someone sitting behind them.

Although that is a good feature as well.

The 3dr Golf isn't a sports coupe, so i decided I may as well have 5 doors.

Yep, that's what he (I) meant. If I had anyone behind me in the Mini I had to adjust my driving position. As I wrote that though I reasoned that the Golf would have more leg room for rear passengers in any case. I know there's heaps of room in the 5 door for rear passengers.

I know what you meant, some people around here want everyone to agree with them and justify their purchases. I was lead to believe the 3 door should have as much room in the back as 5 door?

I've owned a few Hondas (DC2R and Civic VTI-R and you need to move your seat forward in those).

You see - that's why I was confused about Tux's comment and thought it was just cause of badly designed seats.
Yes, where there is a 3dr and 5dr variant of a 'hatchback', they (almost) always have the same wheelbase, and therefore usually have the same front and rear seat capacity.

Of course, the Mini is well known for it's ridiculously small rear passenger space, so that's no surprise.

I had a 2001 Toyota Echo Sportivo, and I never needed to move my seat forward even when I had my 6'2" friends in the back! It's much smaller than a Mini, but has a different usage of its space.

Yeah who knows, some cars are quite roomy inside.

Coming from a 5dr mk4 GTi, when i was looking for a mk5 R32 to buy i was only looking for a 5dr because of the practicallity. i didnt actually like the 3dr mk5's at all!

much to my girlfriends disapointent (she has a 3dr astra), once i actually started looking to buy and starting looking at cars properly my opinion changed... complete 180 and i fell in love with the 3dr... the line coming from the front guards, along the window to the rear panels curving up to the rear window... thats the line i love!!!
so i bought the 3dr R32 and have NO regrets (until i have to move some furniture i guess)...

now i look at the 5dr mk5's and think 'ho hum'.

Threads like this are a bit pointless as everyone is never going to agree.

It's personal preference but 3dr is like the HER's version .

Actually - the other night I was thinking about this some more and I agree that the rear-side window of the 3dr and the lines surrounding it really are the best thing about the Golf MK5 3dr. I mean look at all the other detail in the car - the round rear lights, the round openings of the wheels, the rounded shoulder lines - the entire car has all these round features. You lose that on the 5dr and instead have these straight edges which look out of place with the theme of the MKV Golf.

The MK6 has changed from that situation, it obviously has many hard edges and so I have to admit, that the line you've mentioned, and the shape of the rear-side window doesn't quite have the same effect. Like-wise, the hard lines that occur due to the 5dr don't look as out of place.

But either way, I know which way I'll go with my next purchase

love this line, so appolgies for putting a mk5 in the mk6 section, but maybe this will start the debate around lines merrits between the 2 hehe

No way! The 3 door is the one you get when "She" isnt barking in your ear telling you "YOU MUST HAVE A PRACTICAL CAR OR ELSE!"

LOL.. I wouldn't mind three to be honest, can just never decide on stuff like this.. If i got a 3dr i'd want a sunroof too, which wouldn't cost much more than a 5dr..

Just thought the doors would be lighter and more flimsy, as well as easier to hit on stuff, and a pain if people have to jump out but isn't that often that i got more than two people in the car.

Nah - the doors are actually a bit heavier. They _are_ easier to knock on things though, as they open wider. I personally think that there is less chassis flex in the 3dr vs 5dr - at least it seemed that way in the 'backing out of my old drive way with it's very awkward 2 wheel angle action (you could literally get out of the car and roll under the back left wheel with how far it came off the ground). But I mean, that's just a 'feeling' rather than having any scientific measurements to refer to.

I notice that on driveways too, but after market sways lifts the wheels right off the road moreso. I wouldn't mind a more solid feel though, as the door rubbers seem to move around and make a sound but interstingto see if that goes away after I treat them as they seem dry.

Yeah, the Mk5 does, the measurements are identical, with the exception that the 3dr has an extra 20mm for elbow room, or thereabouts.

I presume the Mk6 is the same.
