[I]t looks like using a slim plate on the R allows more air into the lower grill. On the GTI this is not the case, as the top area of the lower grill is actually filled in. Photos of the R seem to show it being open (maybe someone with an R can enlighten us). It's kinda annoying if the stock holder IS blocking airflow. I mean, detune the car for Australia cause it's too hot down here, and then put that stupid holder on there blocking more air! pfft.
The stock adapter on the GTI does actually extend below the "filled in" area of the lower grille, but not by enough to be any real impediment to airflow - about half the height of a honeycomb hexagon.
Realistically, I'd be surprised if the bracket deflected enough air from the intake of either car to be of consequence - at least not at road-legal speeds.
Totally agree... You should see the email traffic between me, Prodigy & the dealer we are getting our R's from!! It's almost cringeworthy...
I've got my plate brackets & covers, all sorts of new 'car care products' & a schedule for 'it's' first few days I've done more planning & fretting than my 1st born..... It's a car ffs!!
Lol your not wrong, i didn't realise how fitting a set of number plates could be so stressful, DAL344 and myself have discussed numerous ways of fitting the bloody things... VW and their crappy OEM plate holder!!.
As for car care products just had my $360 worth of car cleaning stuff delivered...this car is already costing me a fortune and it's not even here yet!!

Ha I am not the only one!! I bought over $400 worth of detailing gear in preparation last week. I have even vacuumed the garage! Still waiting on the car.
I think the huge front plate holder looks especially bad on a candy white GTI as the black stands out a lot more. If it bothers me enough when I get it I guess I will look into getting it removed and having the holes covered over.

The VW OEM Holder is stupid, and quite frankly is the entire reason I've even discovered the Lakin Front Bracket!
Haven't really caught up with this thread, did you buy a holder for the rear as well? I think it looks best to have a matching set, how much all up for two?
The OEM VW holder looks fine euro plates, and my rear one is taped on the rear so looks fairly good and minimalistic.
LOL I thought that was all a joke until I went to the site! I usually just use meguires soft gel and a decent mit to wash the car. Though the last time I had to care was a good 5yrs+. Driving cars you don't own make you lazy and careless!

Yes, you can see my posts with detailed information and pictures a few pages back here and here

Sounds about right. Depending on size of plates etc I got to about $250 I think. Add in $700 for the plates in VIC and we're nearly $1k! Hence I gave up on the idea for the time being.
