      • Thanks for that - it looks good.

So does the plate bracket against the front bumper, or is there some nylon standoffs behind it? I'm just wondering whether it will start collecting dirt and leaves behind it, or whether there is enough space for them to simply slide through.

Many thanks moonblade87! The result looks very good IMO, and I reckon I'll get the same plate made up for my GTI.

          • No problem =)

            Glad I could help.

Corey, the bracket has some nylon standoffs behind it. Oh and i forgot to mention the venture shield was a complete bumper kit including top of the rear bumper, door cusps and door sills. And the installation went around the brackets, not underneath them (so no protection behind the brackets).

            • I'm really wondering whether it's worth the expense to have a look that's not that much different from stock...IMO of course. I don't really mind the look of the stock plate holder. I must be the only one though...

              • Slimline (NSW) plates and Lakin plate holder

I was inspired by GTICam's post on p.11 of this thread and mounted slimline NSW plates on my GTI. Thought others might be interested.

Philip from Lakinplates.com.au made up a front plate holder that was attached using 4 self tappers. I mounted my plate a bit lower on the bumper than GTICam - simply because I used masking tape to mark the original line of the top of the VW plastic plate holder and then lined up the Lakin holder with this line.

I've popped the original black plastic plugs back in the outermost holes for the moment. Also, you can still see the original manufacturer's innermost 9mm hole when you look at the plate on a certain angle (see photo).

I'm thinking of getting all 4 original plugs painted in Candy White to pop back in the bumper. However, these will still have a hole thru the middle of them unless I bog them up first. And the flanges on the original plugs are 15mm or so in diameter but only need to cover a 9mm hole, so a plug with a smaller flange would look better.

                Any ideas?

                • My first idea would be that you need to fix up the size of those photos... they're smaller than the thumbnails in windows 7

                  • New VIC plates available Aug.

Didn't see this posted earlier and only applicable to VIC people:

                    http://www.vplates.com.au/Coming-soon/

On August 3 2010, VicRoads Custom Plates will be releasing ‘numbers first' plates, generating over 171,000,000 new plate combinations. This will allow customers more variety and personalisation when choosing their ideal Custom plate for their car or motorcycle.

‘Numbers first' is a product line extension of the Custom plates product and for the first time customers will have the opportunity to have either one or two numbers at the beginning of the combination.

                    Following are the new sequences;

                    0.AAA - 9.ZZZ (Car and Motorcycle)
                    0.AAAA - 9.ZZZZ (Car and Motorcycle)
                    0.AAAAA - 9.ZZZZZ (Car)
                    00.AAA - 99.ZZZ (Car and Motorcycle)
                    00.AAAA - 99.ZZZZ (Car)
The pricing for ‘numbers first' plates is identical to the existing Custom plates price range. This means customers can get their hands on a set of new ‘numbers first' plates for $495 with the option of having them in slimline size at no extra cost. You can even upgrade your ‘numbers first' plates to Gold or Silver colours for an extra $100.

‘Numbers first' targets a large audience and with the creation of so many plate combinations and colours, 25 colours to be exact! For example car enthusiasts have the chance to create a plate that represents the year and model of their vehicle i.e. 09.WRX or 55.CHEV. Or someone wanting something a little edgy can be 2.COOL or 2.HOT.
Not sure if they will be available in the Euro style plate sizes.

                            • The old Black and Decker... Just gotta drill in the right spot on the plate holder so you don't drill through to the bodywork underneath. If you drill at the top, then it's got more space than the bottom bit. You'll know when you're through, it's not a particularly thick piece of plastic. Roll the plate slightly before fitting too, as the holder is slightly curved and then you don't get the edges sticking out.

Around the back, there were two holes for the old plate, so just match up and drill.

I thought the Euro plate would be a perfect match for the front holder, but it's not quite. The plate is a few mm short of filling it width wise and a few mm taller than the holder, so it covers the bottom lip of the older a bit too.

                              • I've been looking at some pictures of the Euro plates fitted on some cars overseas and they seem to be using 2 of the 4 screw holes that hold the black plate holder to the bumper, i'm guessing to avoid having to drill new holes into the plate holder (see attached picture).
Anyone attached their plates like this?
