  • Seems a lot of dealers (in Vic anyway) don't deal in the euro plates, guessing they don't want to spend the money having them sitting around or can't. Either way they fit standard size plates or slimline ones.

Do/can they use the same holes as euro plates. eg, if I take delivery of both cars with normal or slimline plates fitted and go and wack on euro plates later, will I have to do new holes and cover up old ones?

Or would it be best to get the euro plates, give them to the dealer before delivery and have them fit for me?

    • I was told by the dealer that they couldn't supply any custom plates (including Euro style) here in Melbourne, so will need to organise my own and give them to the dealer to fit.

Although i actually like the idea of using double sided tape to keep them on, and not having any screw holes in them at all.

The Euro plates don't come with any holes pre-drilled so you could just use the holes from the plates the dealer put on and drill the Euro plates to match up.

Didn't know that, thanks. I'll worry about them later then.

          • Thanks to GTICam's instructions I have also removed the OEM front plate mount and attached my black euro plates directly to the bumper. I have been driving it around for a few months without plate covers but have (finally!) just purchased front and rear brackets and covers from Philip at Lakin plates.

He was extremely helpful as others have mentioned here. Even better he is offering a 5% discount to VWW members - use the code 'VW-Watercooled' at checkout.

In the case where a dealer won't order the plates for you (and I mean, it is a pain...), many are happy for you to order the plates and provide them to them for installation during pre-delivery. So check if this is a viable option with your dealer.

I've also removed the plastic adapter and mounted a small Lakin slimline bracket to the front of my GTI, as per moonblade87's config. I'm still working with Philip on some slight modifications (to the screws and washers that are directly visible to either side of the numberplate) before I post photos, but needless to say, it's a huge improvement over stock!

Was more a case of trying to avoid paying the $495 fee for them hehe. I'll worry about them later if I can be bothered but I'd say the tightwad in me will live with the normal slimlines.

                        • Oh, you NEVER avoid paying the fee for your rego/insurance/plates man. The dealers don't get any discount on that, so the entire cost is passed straight along to you. Therefore if you want to arrange your own plates and/or CTP, most dealers are fine for you to do that, you just subtract the plates and/or CTP cost from the quote and pay the insurance company and/or motoring agency directly instead of via the dealer.

But ignorance is bliss when they quote you a drive away price with them included I'm not sure the white ones are worth $495 let alone the black ones for $695. That is a fair chunk of mod money right there!

Cool Adam, looking forward to seeing the finished product. Will be some great photos as always hehe
Want to get that awful front plastic adapter off my car too, still deciding whether to change to standard euro
plates or keep personalised plates on, wont be selling with personalised ones though so will need to consider
something to accomodate standard plates for when the time comes also....sigh decisions, decisions.
Wouldnt have to worry if VW didnt put that stupid plastic adapter on to start with.
Thinkin' I need deeper pockets LOL

                              • Personally I didn't like the Queensland euro style plates because you can only choose 2 letters and 2 numbers..must start with Q and must end in Z. So I went for something a little different. MMMMM Donuts lol

And these were only $465, no yearly fees or any of that nonsense up here. Although I hear our rego is more expensive too
