I have an R on order (due late Nov) & have sent an email to Phil at Lakin plates to make some brackets - he's measuring the R up this week. I've used his brackets & covers on my last 3 cars so I can definately recommend. Just google Lakin plates....

Please don't tell me you are getting black 19" ... We'll be driving round Perth like twins!!

Cheers, i'll check out the Lakin website.

Went for silver rims, seriously considered the black but have gunmetal rims on my blue wrx now so fancied going back to silver on blue.

Well with you, me and shakespeare that's atleast 3 new R's on Perth streets hopefully come November. Did you order Rising Blue also?

        • I checked out the Lakin website and it got me thinking. If you order a set of Euro plates for example can you take delivery of the car with those plates fitted instead of the dealer fitting state plates initially and then you having to change them after?

Looking at the front plate holder on the R, new holes would need to be drilled by the dealer if state plates were fitted on delivery.

Also does anyone know if there are holes pre-drilled in the rear bumper?

          • From what I've seen on Volkswagens, there are no pre-drilled holes (even on the front plate holder). If you organise your custom plates and plate holders/covers and hand them to your dealer, I'm sure that they'll arrange them to be fitted for you. Or you could just fit them yourself when you get home (you're able to drive your car directly home from the dealer without the plates fitted... at least you are in NSW, so check that out in your local state/territory).

            • Ok guys..

I finally got my car Thursday evening. Promised Phillip I'd post some pics of the front and rear brackets. Apologies in advance for the poor quality. They were taken with my iPhone. (I didn't even have time to blank out the plate lol)

Anyways for anyone looking to not drill additional holes onto the front bumper, this is a worthy option. Original plate holder was removed and the bracket was then directly fitted using the existing holes.

I will take better shots when I have time using a proper camera.

Oh this was shots taken at Artamon, Ozicozi Garage where i got my venture shield done as well.

              • That doesn't look too bad actually. I would love some better photos when you get a chance, especially one from straight in front and lower down (so we can see how much it hangs below the bumper, if any).
Btw, what package did you get with the Venture Shield from Surfacetech (OziCozi's new name)? Did they put it under the plate holders?

Yeah Rising Blue .... All my recent cars have been white or black (apart from an Integra Type R) so I went for blue with black ... Factory bluetooth & MDI.
The date I've been given is end of November!

I'll let you know when Phil @ Lakin gets back to me re: brackets. I sent him some photo's I took of an R as OsPk VW but he's going to measure up to get it spot on.
Moonblade87's look great!! The front looks nice & clean ... The rear has no pre-drilled holes IF your dealer doesn't add any that is >> I would think it will be same as Moonblades tbh

I think we have all been given the same date of end of November.

Yeah if you could let me know about the brackets please when Phil gets back to you that would be great.

Shame there are no pre-drilled holes anywhere, some accurate measurements are going to have to be taken then, especially for the back..

Awesome moonblade87 - this is the solution I've been discussing with Philip for weeks and just wanted to hold off until I saw some pics before I ordered a replacement bracket. (I currently have the larger-sized Lakin plate which extends the full width and height of the original plastic adapter, and covers it up.)

As per coreying's post, if you could post up a few shots of the front bracket from directly front-on, from head-height, plate height and lower down, that would be fantastic. iPhone shots are fine - all I need is an indication in decent light. Thanks mate!

Nah - the back is fine - it's hardly changed from the GTI or even the previous models. It's the front bumper that is the issue with the MK6 Golfs, ESPECIALLY if you wish to mount the plate directly to the bumper without the use of the VW plate holder. moonblade87's is the first photos I've seen of the Lakin plate holder for direct mounting, and although still not an idea situation, it looks better than the previous attempt which went onto the existing plate holder (it looked too bulky and clumsy.
The Golf R's front bumper is different again, and the mounting holes are different too! So that's the big concern.

Yeah it's slightly different from the GTi - That's why Phil's going to get the measurements for the R from the VW dealership in Launceston ... For some reason there aren't many R's in TAS at the moment ;o)

I'll post when he gets back to me ... It will probably be this time next week as I'm away for the week from tomorrow!!

                          • Looking good on the white GTI. Can't tell from my phone, but would I be able to do this seeing as I still have the plugs from the original plastic holder, but not the pins that clipped it the holder on? ie, does this new flat black metal plate have it's own plugs/screws that simply use the existing holes.

                            • moonblade87's photo shows a screw in the "flat black metal plate", so I assume it's either screwing into the original plugs, holes, or has it's own plugs which the screws fit into

Correct - I believe Philip has supplied screws with the bracket that fit into the original holes, but if you order a plate, Philip will happily fabricate and supply whatever you decide looks best for you. Here are some alternate suggestions he's made to me:

I have in stock here some 10mm black nylon screw grommets which come with black nylon flat head screws. These are thin enough that I could machine the face of the front bracket to recess the screw head to sit flush. In this way, our bracket could be mounted directly to the car using the existing holes, while allowing a totally secure fitting, at the same time doing away with the overly heavy look.

elisiX, if you're thinking about it, I'd suggest you shoot Philip an email - he's really helpful and can make lots of suggestions for what suits your tastes best. I can't recommend him highly enough.
