  • Nice NSW plate for a potent R or just too cryptic

You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

Well it may just be that I don't get it, but if you hadn't said what you were going for, I wouldn't have realised that they were customised to say something

      • Just my 2c..

I am a fan of the stock look on most cars (with the exception being ride height, usually a little bit of lowering is good on most cars).. Anyway I have just ordered my Custom Euro plates as all of the brochures and pictures feature white Euro plates and I really liked the look..
It is a shame in WA that we have a crappy picture of a swan, but over all I think the plate looks good and it means I do not have to mess about with different sizes on the front holder.

I ordered a rear bracket from Lakin plates as well as two of the covers, there was no point in putting on a front bracket considering the stock one was the correct size for the plate.

              • I recently attended the VWGolf.net Warehouse meet and got to see an example of the plate surround / holder being removed. The plate was basically screwed directly into the bumper - but what you could see close up were the marks left by the surround / holder. Essentially the bumpers paint was damaged from the edge of the holder cutting in. So doing this mod left me a little wary but I went ahead. Thankfully when I popped out the clips and took off the holder, there was not a single mark, line, cut into the bumper!

Now I didn't think to get some rubber washers ready before doing this so I had to come up with an alternate (possibly temporary) solution. Now the original plan was that using the rubber washers I would screw the plate directly to the bumper. Its position will cover the 2 inner holes left by the holder. The 2 outer holes left by the holder would simply be plugged using the holders plugs (they just sit there relatively tight). However my temporary solution is seen in the picture below. All holes are filled using the plugs and the plate is cable tied into the mesh of the bumper.

Yes I know its not dead centre, the cable ties are white (not black) and its a little crooked but this is temporary - or is it. I quite like the look and can easily re do this using black ties and a little more time to line things up better. The only issue I have with this is the 4 plug's in the bumper. 2 is not such an issue as they blend into the dark colour but 4 is a little too much IMO. So I may end up just screwing the plate directly into the bumper covering the two middle, lower plugs and simply use the plugs in the higher wider holes.

I wouldn't recommend that placement at all.... you've basically got your numberplate blocking the intercooler/radiator intake! Although I realise there is still plenty of air able to get through, you're still possibly heavily impacting the cooling potential.
So I strongly recommend you go for your next option, which you mentioned, to screw it directly onto the bumper, covering the two middle holes

                    • Yup that is the plan. Just need to find the right washers/grommets to mount the plate 'off' the bumper.

I've just replied to a similar comment on another forum (lol), but basically only half the plate is covering the opening, the other half is over a blocked 'mesh' area.

Gotta say though, it does look awesome down low like that. Perhaps I should get all fuk sik and sit the plate on my dash

                        • Good idea - ill have to look into that. Where did you purchase them from?

Will they come off the bumper if you needed to take them off without damaging the finish/paint?

It's double sided tape so no it won't damage the paint when you remove it (unless you've painted your car with water based house paint over the factory paint)

I used some 3M grip lock on a desk in the mid 80's... I'm still trying to get the stuff off, lol

                              • My original plan was that i was going to buy some slimline plates front and back for the R, i don't fancy removing the number plate holder and after seeing how will the Euro plates fit will no doubt end up just buying a set of these...
