I owned a 4.2l turbo diesel Landcruiser for 4 years in the early '90s and its the only vehicle I regret parting with ( seachange, no longer practical). Hardly a hill forced a gearchange and 11.1 l/100km for a vehicle over 2 tonnes. I have ordered the GTD for grunt, fuel economy and GTI styling without the go-fast red trimmings. I won't reveal my age, but if I did you'd understand why I'm more concerned about the delivery date of my GTD than the increment of performance in the GTI.

I reckon the GT Sport 125kw TDI would have been a sweet acquisition. Seems to be in a class by itself, other than cosmetics and a lower price, any performance diff between that and the new GTD?
Sure was!
The new GTD will have a lot of upside engine wise being common rail. Quieter, smoother power delivery, and much more sophisticated control over the injection. I'd expect the power band to be wider and it to be better off boost than the PD GT. Gale Banks the major diesel guru from the USA reckons a PD diesel can be hopped up 25-30% whereas common rail allows for towards 60% power increase. The downside is even more emission controls, there's now a fuel and oil vapour canister that dumps these back into the inlet at suitable operating parameters on top of the MKV GT exhaust particulate filter. Greener at the tailpipe than the GT for sure, but on the flipside even more crud going back into the inlet.
If I wasn't happy as Larry ( sorry Larry ) in my GT TDI, I'd be ordering a GTD in a heartbeat.
I wanted the 125KW TDI engine for my Golf but no option for it back in July as there were no GT's around..
Perhaps I can get an Upsolute chip or something.. boost it up to 130KW
I'm guessing this might void a warranty or something...
Oettinger have an ECU update for the TDIs which is covered as far as warranty is concerned. Contact Guy at Harding Performance if you have any questions, and I'm sure he can refer you to who in your area can perform the flash for you.
Edit: Hehe - TDiJetta09 just posted as I was writing this and I notice he has the Oettinger tune too!
