Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hahah
There's a way top get around it tho.
You are able to get a letter of exemption from vic roads if your parents onl own cars that are more powerful.
My dad has a V8 Merc and so i should be alroight.
So the GTI isn't actually yours?

Not a bad car to have available to drive if your still on your L's.

If it's registered under your name, you won't get one*. At least in NSW.

I don't even think you"ll be allowed to put it under your name..

It's on the high performance 6 cylinder list.
In fact ALL Porsche boxer cars are.

          you know what...its all crap.
i am a good driver.....sensibly and skillful wise.
I dont actually have access to another car besides my dads e500 merc which is a five and a half litre v8 i;m pretty sure....so they can either give me an exemption or i'll just drive it anyways.
but i'll cross tht bridge when i get to it.
oh and sorry i got mixed up...the car is under my dads name for the time being...but will be under mine when i turn 18.

But its currently your daily drive right?

I am assuming you drive alone without you L's displayed?

(I know I stupidly did that when I first got a car)

That's the problem man. Think about it.
Under your name, means you paid for it and own the title in the eyes of the RTA/Vicroads (whatever). They will question WHY you bought that car and therefore turn you away.
I've had mine for more than 2 years now, still on my greens. Still under my dads name.

With that attitude you won't be with us long, you don't even have your license yet so how can you claim to be sensible and skillful?

Aren't L and P platers restricted to 80kph's (at least for the first year)? Don't you think 113 is a little over 80?

Your parents could always be more responsible (clearly you're not) and buy you a corolla especially if they want you to be around for your 21st birthday. Your attitude so far is typical of a spoilt rich boy whose parents give him whatever he wants. Judging by your posts on here so far everything has been about getting 18-19" alloy wheels, the engine flashed and other performance mods (that is until you get a new car from your parents and pass this car to your younger brother).

but i'll cross tht bridge when i get to it.

Good luck with that, I'm sure the transport department will be leaning over backwards to accommodate your requirements.

I don't normally agree with restrictions on cars for P platers but in your case I'm all for it

lol lets not beat the guy with a stick for embellishing a little.

I hope everything works out mate. Hopefully you can keep the car in your parents name with you legally listed as a driver.

ps. I had a mirage for my first car so good on you.

Good to see how well you respect the law. Does your driving demonstrate similar disregard for the rules?

First off, i have been working since i was twelve and poayed 20 grand for the car of my own money. So i'm not just some spoilt rich kid. Second off, i dont think there is any law that L's can't go past 80 and i was in a 110km zine doing 113 because i know that the tacho s out a bit so i was technically doing less. Third, i wasn;t trying to be a smartass by saying im a good driver, I'm merely pointing out the fact that i dont go doing stupid **** while i drive, i like to cruise around when i get the chance and if i have the opportunity to open the taps (i.e on a track day or somethnig) i would love to.
So dont go making stupid assumptions and ripping into me without knowing half of the story. I still have to pay for petrol insurance and rego. The fact i want 18" rims is fair enough im my view considering ive een working six days a week for the past four weeks just to save up enough for it.
And as for chipping it, whats the difference if i chip it or if you do?
You're probably a less responsible driver than me.

Assuming a V6 Holden ute is legal you include the R32 too

I understand it would be hard(er) to manage if people mod their vehicles, but I would suggest that would be the minority (of p plater drivers). The same approach to what we do now for noise or pollution can work just as easily, basically if you get pinged you must get it tested, otherwise it's assumed it's within limits. When it comes to enforcement YES! People could break the law and mod their cars in one way or another to get more power out and YES they could run different tunes to achieve that, although I'd take a stab and say these people most likely just drive round their turbo or V8 cars now anyway.

From the higher end of town:
                        Mitsubishi Lancer Evo is 217kW @ 1,595kw = ~136kW/T
                        The Subaru Impreza WRX (manual) is 195kW @ 1,410kg = ~138kW/T
                        The Nissan Silvia is 184kW @ 1270kg = ~145kw/T
                        (In it's NA form it's 121kW = ~95kW)
                        The Commodore SS V8 is 260kW @ 1,777kg = ~146kW/T

The "line" would have to be somewhere in between these and the above.

To be honest I'm a little surprised at the results, I didn't think they would all be so close, but here we are. Setting a limit at 125kW/T covers all the "family cars" but includes some decent opions from the VAG garage. In many respects an inexperienced driver would be better off behind the wheel of a GTI than they would the [comparatively] boat like Commodore with his foot to the floor.
That's a good point aswell.....i am driving the GTI and although it is a veryyy quick car it does have a safety rating better than almost all other cars that P platers drive and the power to wieght is under the required amount. Vicroads has a really flawed process for this and they just make car enthusiasts like myself annoyed with the fact that we can't drove wat we want. In the USA the equivalent to a P platyer liscence is given at the age of 17 and there are no restrictions at all. Now i'm not saying we shouldn;t have any restrictions...but something a bit fairer would be nice. Your all probably past your P's already and don't care all tht much, but trust me, it's very annoying.

I'm certainly not having a go at you mate.

Also, I believe that you are not legally allowed to exceed 80 km/h on your L's and 90 on your P's.

This might have changed since I was a provisional driver.

I don't think this is the case in VIC. P platers have passenger restrictions in there first year of driving.

You won't get much sympathy on here mate... it's the rules for a reason, and especially designed for P platers who think that they are "sensible" and "skillful" when they actually have zero real world experience.

Don't expect any assistance from anyone here on getting around the rules.

I'm all for this sort of legislation, regardless of the fact there will always be some odd scenarios that make it look dumb. Not only is the legislation intended to protect inexperienced drivers from themselves, but perhaps more to the point, it is to protect others from them. Too often one hears about innocent people dying while the perpetrator walks away with metaphorical scratches. That the Golf has seven airbags etc. to protect the occupants is one thing, but not all crash victims on the receiving end are so fortunate. Besides, being surrounded by safety equipment is no guarantee of avoiding serious injury or death anyway.
