That's strange - I got a spare key when mine was delivered..? but yeah, <$300 sounds like a good deal. Dealer mentioned to me in passing that they're generally in excess of $400 to replace..

Mk6 spare key to go surfing

          Hi

I have just been quoted $128 by dealer to get a wet/dry key cut (without remote).
This is the key you can use to open the doors but can't start the car with.
I need this key to go surfing: I use this key to get into car where I hide to remote key to start car.

$128 seems a little high to provide a blank and mechanically cut a key (which a locksmith can do for $20).

Does anyone know where I could find a blank key for an MK6 Golf?

          Thanks guys

          JM

I got one for my mk5 (I assume they'd be pretty much identical locks though) from a good quality auto-locksmith. It cost $65.

You just need to be careful that you go to a quality locksmith, because the key is laser cut (very precise, the guy who did mine had to have two goes at it) and it's expensive equipment to invest in so not all locksmiths have it.

Hey mate. I merged your thread here (actually merging 4 other threads all on the same topic) into the one thread and also placed it in the MK6 Forum Index to hopefully make it easier for people to find.

Read back because there have been several suggestions / solutions raised for surfers/swimmers etc.

Additionally, there is a company on eBay who sells the VW replacement remote and can cut the key using the proper cutting technique based on a photo of your key that you send them. They use the machine marks and NOT the "grove", which could be worn, therefore making a copy which is as good as your original key on the day you got it. I'm sure a company like that could make you a dead key to simply get into your car if you contacted them nicely with your requirements

                  spare key

                  Hi

I am looking to get a spare key for my new golf.

How much are they and is it worth getting one now or waiting till you need to get one.

I had a situation with my old car that we needed a new key and they didn't make them any more..

wonder if it's likely this will happen with the golf. Ie how often do they change the key systems... my car is a golf R

                  dealer quoting around 500 bucks...

                  thanks keg75

yeah i'll get two keys... i guess one for me (and a spare) till I get my old girlie back or meet someone new. I just concerned about have only one key between multiple drivers in future if one key dies. i don't want to get caught out like last time but is it worth another 500 bucks or so for this...

anyone know the retail cost of them?

Fairly sure you can only have two keys at a time - each key has to be synced to the car (quite literally plugged in and connected) before working.

Good friend had a dealer lose a key, and get him a new one (using the above process). Dealer then found the key two weeks later, but it wouldn't work with the car. Said it was a two key max on the car.

No it's not. When I took delivery of my car, one of the keys was scratched. The dealer said no problem, we'll get you another set made up. I now have three sets of keys for my car.
