Is is possible to buy a non remote (dumb) key for current VWs? Not keen on leaving my car keys in the wheel well when I go surfing. The 2 provided remote keys will drown if i take them swimming. So I reckon I need a plain old metal key. is there such a beast?

I have one of these when I paddle my kayak, and they are indeed solid units. If I forgot the combo, I reckon I'd be screwed, as the tumblers are a quality unit. Mine isn't this exact brand, but it's a full metal jobbie with a very solid lock. I clip it onto my towbar eyelets.

Greg that Key Safe looks like it would be a workable solution. My preference would be for small waterproof key that i could carry with me. Is this actually possible or do all the modern keys need a chip in them for the immobiliser? Is it in fact a valet key I am after?Golf Mk6 118 TSI DSG |APR Stage I ECU Upgrade | HEX-USB+CAN

If you really want a key that will operate your engine that his a whole new (and more expensive) ball game. The only place I've found that can supply an immobiliser chip that works in modern VAG vehicles is the VAG dealer, and you also have to get the ECU programmed to recognise the new key. The immobiliser chip is totally waterproof (but not the remotes).
Remember to wipe off the salt water before putting it in the lock, otherwise it will corrode the pins/wafers.2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).

1) For me is is not worth the ~$400 cost
2) the lock/unlock process is too convoluted for my liking.Golf Mk6 118 TSI DSG |APR Stage I ECU Upgrade | HEX-USB+CAN

This is what I loved about my Mercedes key. The metal eyelet for your key ring popped out and became a regular old surf proof key. Lock the fancy electrical bit in the glove box and lock the door with the key and away you go. As I sold that I'm worried about how I'm going to go when I get the key with the Skoda. So, hope to hear of a solution soon!
