    Thirsty little devil

    I must confess that I am surprised how thirsty (in a relative sense) the new 1.6TDI engine is. A claimed 4.9L/100km is more than 10% thirstier than similar sized and powered offerings from Peugeot and Citroen where 4.4L/100km is the norm. The slightly lighter Mini D using a version of the Peugeot/Citroen 1.6L diesel engine is claiming 3.9L/100km.
    Whilst new dubber 1.6TDI is not bad in an outright sense, it's hardly better than the much more powerful 2.0TDI.
    Not a real complaint given that it's a price leader (so to speak) but hardly the class leader one would expect of a new diesel engine.

      Yeah seems strange.
      From memory even the new Audi 1.9 A3 gets 3.9 L/100 but this is with 7 DSG and
      roll resisting tyres.
      I think they have out priced themselves again due to the larger fuel use
      compared to the cheaper and more fuel efficient Peugeot/citroen.

        Have to disagree fellas. Checking the Peugeot website shows that the most economical 308 (Golf competitor) diesel gets 4.7 combined which is very close to the Golf's 4.9. All the other 308 diesels have higher consumption. You're probably thinking of the 207?

          Interesting that they could just sneak in the dry clutch 7 speed DSG used on the petrol variants. I wonder if the output really is 250Nm or actually more... or whether they "detuned it" to make it fit within the 250Nm capacity limit of the gearbox.

            The 1.6TD only has a 5 speed manual. And lower power doesn't always mean lower consumption. It's just a was for VW to get a lower priced TD onto the market. Though, for the price most people would be better off getting the 90TSi and pocketing the money.

              I got to drive one today as my service loan car, Its a nice drive , very basic interior . Engine is very quiet and is a sprightly as the 1.9 , loves to rev i'd be happy if i owned one
