I had a TomTom setup on our Easter drive to Melbourne, running alongside the RNS510. This may sound strange however when I heard that fixed speed cameras in Victoria have no warning signs before them like the ones here in NSW I thought I'd use the TomTom as an alert device.

The irony: I was busted for speeding anyways just before the border by a cop hiding at the bottom of a hill. His radar pinged me at 122ks, my GPS readout was exactly the same (speedo was showing >130) For the rest of the trip I set the cruise @ 121ks, drove past two more cops in Victoria - no dramas.

Fuel consumption for the trip (Sydney > Melbourne > Twelve Apostles via Great Ocean Road > back to Sydney) 5.9/100 That's with 4 people + luggage. Range on the MFD 860kms - highest figure I've ever seen on the car. Pretty accurate as well, only had to refuel 3 times. Cheaper than flying there.
Is yours a DSG or manual? I just did that same trip.
That sucks about getting busted for speeding. The vic cameras are on nearly every overpass and they don't have the same % allowance as the ones in other states.
Only three years and you'll get those 6 points back. I got done 5 years ago for doing 114 in a 90 zone just after the 90 sign, which I missed. "Is there a reason you were travelling at such a high speed Sir". I laughed which didn't go down well.

    • I have the manual mate.

Yea I've been done for speeding before.. One thing I've learned is to be nice and not give them s***.. They deal with crap all day long so as long as you're honest with them they should be fair with you.. Even though he pinged me @ over 120kms (110 zone) he only fined me 10kms and under so I only lost 2 demerit points (long weekend double demerit)

Had he wanted to be a complete a** he could have flogged me with the full 6 points, so yeah...

Ye I noticed that too.. The GPS wouldn't shut up lol.. I don't know how the Melbourne folk keep track of where all the cameras are!

      • I wish they had those rules when I got done. It was 6 points for your speed as well.

It's quite interesting how low the averages are for your model golf. They seem to be really fuel efficient.
I'm interested in the difference on long drives between the Manual and DSG. I'm a manual because I hate autos.
        Safe driving.

        • I've just done Melbourne to Sydney and back in one day. 1610kms and got 6.8l/100kms, which I'm pretty impressed with.

Did you use the spare 4 hours to eat, sleep or calculate fuel use

                  • Deep sleep... Wouldn't want to do it again anytime soon. The last few hours were hard work keeping awake. Fuel figures are based on the MFD, but they seem pretty accurate.

                    • Clocked up 660km on the last tank, could have pushed out another 20-30km. Loving the economy I'm getting even with spirited driving here and there! Every time the topic comes up with my mates (none drive VW) they just tell me to keep quiet haha

Think my overall average is sitting at 7.6 L, can't complain with that! Filled up with 98 oct since new, VPower and Ultimate depending whats closer at the time. More so VPower as the BP pump in my suburb (brand new station too) is so freaking slow it drives me up the wall!

                      • 2011 gti dsg - 720km on a tank(didn't want to run it anywhere empty, usually fill up at 650km - quarter left)
                        2012 tsi(90) dsg - 900kms each time.

So happy to be part of the vag world now with the terrific fuel economy.

                        • That's awesome! You'd be doing plenty of highway to get the GTI into the 700's?

                            • Another Sydney to Gold Coast run in the 118tsi. 5.7 l/100km on the way there car fully loaded with 3 people and lots of luggage etc.

On the way back one less person and slightly less luggage 5.6 l/100km. Just over 9 driving hours each way without speeding but keeping tightly to the limit avoiding traffic by leaving early. The trip is approx 850km, comfortably does it on less than a single tank. The ride too is comfortable so much so that we didn't need to stop at all on the way there (excluding the odd red light).
