Oh good, so I'm not the only one who has (at least on one occasion) turned on the fog light when reversing at night

I'd be up for replacing the fog light (which does nothing for me) for another reversing light if the process were simple enough.

I've just thought of that idea actually...never done it before I usually only park in well lit areas.

The fog light is good for "emergency" situations - used it once when cruising from Port Campbell back to Melbourne on a bloody foggy night. I reckon it's really worth keeping it there!

        Why? Did you remove it?

So there is no blub in the LED R tail lights???

Couldn't you just turn it "on" thru the VCDS

This is how useless these tinted bulbs are, even with an additional 6 watts it still outputs a fraction of the oem bulb.

The back of the light housing is blanked off but you could open it up with a drill and dremel.
The reflector is likely also missing as well so take that into account, or if there is one there it will be a dummy one so the car looks the same on both sides.

If there is no bulb there turning it on in VCDS isn't going to achieve a lot!

(I assume that you mean turning on the other reverse light or fog light via VCDS but they won't work as there is nothing plugged into the controller for that side of the car, VCDS is only required when running another wire from the controller to the rear hatch if you were installing a second reverse light or a second fog light - the easiest way to do this is to modify the harness in the hatch and "jumper" the other light across but it can have drawbacks if too much power is drawn with the controller shutting it down thinking there is a short or other fault)

As we didn't see any changes to say that the rear fog light would be removed in MY11 or MY11.5 models, I'm sure that the foglight is actually there, and has just been overlooked...

The bulb for the fog light will be there as there is no inner light available without either reverse or fog light. It will be a failure to RTFM or look at the light switch! Even the R32 without front fog lights had the rear fog lights and I doubt there is a VW on the market now without a rear fog light.

Exactly... and if they did, then it'd also be inexplicable about why they wouldn't have just given us the rear lights with the 2 reverse lights which are already used in other markets where rear fog lights are not provided....

Im pretty damn certain that i do not have a fog light at the back of my R. Where is the fog light "switch" located to turn them on?? There are the 2x reflectors in the bumper (one on each side of course), and then the tailights. And the taillights only have parker light / brake light section, and then indicators and 1x reverse light.

Turn the light switch all the way to the right then 'pull' it out towards you.

                          Just tried this and......nothing.

Can someone with a Golf R be kind enough to take a photo of their "rear fog light". Looks like mine doesn't have one (car built Jan 2011)

Could you take a picture of the fog light for me. Headlight switch on and pulled out.....and nothing.

What will taking a photo of the fog light do? RTFM, turn the switch to the correct position, a light will illuminate in the instrument cluster and a bright red light that is not exactly hard to miss will originate from your behind. The ignition needs to be turned on or the engine running for the light to operate.

Then it's time to call your dealer it's a pretty simple task to activate it really...if you've done as we've advised but have no results then something's wrong.

Didnt have the ignition switched on when i tried it earlier. Funny that the ignition needs to be on to turn the fog light on, but every other light works without it.....bloody Germans.

So i stand corrected - there is a foglight.....although i doubt ill ever use it.
