No, but if I knew milk was being sold for 30% off at Coles, and full price at Woolworths, I would go to Coles. We are in a market economy.

If you were buying a new TV, would you walk into Harvey Norman and pay the sticker price without asking for a better price? I know I certainly wouldn't.

Incidently, I haven't seen anyone here trying to get two cars for the price of one - most people are happy with a 11-12% discount off RRP.

Could any of you located in Perth please post what line of work you are in and how I can get hold of you. I am sure that each and every one of you would be more than happy to discount your goods and/or services without hesitation to me and the rest of the members.

Honestly, what a witch hunt! Poor dealers are trying to turn a profit in very hard times, just like each and every one of us in our chosen industry. IF they had to do every deal at the pricing you suggest they would have to close the doors and run service only centres. Have you stopped to think how many people are connected to a dealership and rely on them for their family income??? Detailers, panel & paint, dent removers, sign writers, truck dirvers, etc....Yes they may not be lawyers, accountants, IT experts and Doctors like yourselves but they also need to earn a living.

I am a massive advocate for a WIN/WIN and believe in a fair price.

Spread sheets on how to get a car at cost and screw the motor industry over?? PLEASE ...what rubbish! Take a long hard look at yourself.

I'm looking to buy a car in the next few months and the Golf VI is top of my list of possibilities.

Dealers are happy to let you know that they have flexibility on the sticker price but they don't want to start negotiating until they know you are ready to buy. I'm not ready yet, so this thread and the spreadsheet is really helpful for deciding the options I want and a realistic price to pay.

I'm not looking to screw dealers over. They are free to reject or accept offers as they choose.

Sorry, not in Perth but I work in engineering consulting. Since the mining industry went belly up there's far more competition for whatever work is left and everyone is discounting big time, doing jobs at cost etc.

So yes, you'd probably get a great deal at the moment, and I have no doubt that our clients have a big fat spreadsheet with everyone's prices in it.

Do they put something in the water in WA? I had already signed up for my car before the SS was up and running but as someone who finds haggling for new cars a bit daunting I think it is a useful research tool. Chylld, top effort mate. You are offering up your time to assist other people and should not be lambasted for that.

Things must be bad in the car sales game if people are worried about what is written on a forum. Get a grip of yourselves. No-one is trying to screw you over. To most people a new car is the second biggest expense they will make in their lives. The SS is a guide to help people, with a general idea of savings that *could* be possible.

Ultimately, you as the sales person have the final say on if you will accomodate someone and make a sale. Try coming around from the other side of the sales desk and seeing things from a customer perspective. We are all doing it tough in this financial climate not just car salespeople.

All I can say is that I know the profitability of a few German VW dealerships and also of a VW Oz dealer. I can promise you the Aussie dealer would not like to swap with his German fellow dealer....

Taking 10% of the on-road price leaves them with a decent margin, very decent in fact, compared to European levels. Especially considering there is an artificial $2000+ dealer delivery charge included in that price, which is certainly a lot more that what they pay VW OZ..

At the end of the day, once you enjoy your car it does not really matter whether you paid $1000 more or less for it. IMO anyway.

The recent changes in the law to do with motor vehicle pricing should have put a stop to all the shenanigans in terms of the differences in prices paid for cars. You now have to quote a drive away price, but it seems that very few dealerships do this. Even if there is a driveaway price, can you explain what you actually get for the $1,000 - $3,000 range for dealer delivery?

- Transportation of the car? included in RRP already?
- Preparation and compliance? included in RRP already? (BTW picked up my R32 and vacuum hose was loose. Dangerous as my brakes weren't assisted and then it threw and engine fault code. GG)
- Washing and detailing? I've seen too many examples of this "first" wash result in swirl marks ruining what was a pristine paint job.

Dealer delivery is where the biggest difference in price can be made.

I do believe that there is a sweet spot where the dealer gets an alright margin and the purchaser gets a fair discount on the car. What this thread and the spreadsheet does is practically show the theory of market price at work to get to that point.

As negotiations still exist on price, there will be a point that both parties will agree on. This is the market price. Otherwise known as the price a willing but not anxious fully informed purchaser is willing to pay a willing but not anxious seller for that good.

Obviously if all car dealers just stuck to RRP and fixed pricing on everything (options etc.) would there even be a discussion on this (other than pricing fixing issues). RRP is only the recommended price. Unlike a speed sign which is the MAXIMUM speed you should travel at.

So stop your whining about people posting relevant inforrmation on DISCUSSION forums. The times have changed where the internet makes it so easy to do your research to the point where you may know more about the product than the actual salesman (price, spec, functionality etc)

The car is usually the second largest personal asset (really a liability) that they own. So going in to purchase one may be few and far between for some and quite daunting. Some others like the thrill of the haggle. End of the day this thread fully supports why forums like this exist now. For people to get together, share a yarn and information.

As part of the feedback for every Volkswagen dealer, the purchasing process is a key performance indicator and I guess making the negotiations as smooth as possible will only contribute to this score increasing.

It has definately increased sales of cars - I know personally of two people that purchased cars ($55k each) with the 50% tax break being the primarly decision behind buying those cars.

Yes, many of the sales would have happened without the tax break, but the whole idea behind the stimulus package was to increase spending, and that's definately what it has done.

ps - Buster, I assume you actually work in another capacity at VW Wangara? (not that this is an issue, just curious!)

I am considering a mk 6 118 comfortline dsg met paint park assist dealer not going for free on roads do you think i could get this sort of deal i am willing to pay rrp for the car and options but that s it.Is it realistic ? the dealer delivery is $2995 + rego ect.It came to $40500 ,I asked about the gti golf but from what they said i have no hope of paying any less than rrp for car and options and $2999 delivery +rego.I am having second thoughts about the ralliart and now the golf is getting expensive may be i chip my polo and wait a year or so .

Are you pulling my leg...Why pay rrp when you can pay market price? Have you actually downloaded and looked at your specs in the spreadheet. If not, I strongly suggest you do. Then ring a few other dealers. If you cant save yourself 2 or 3 grand from rrp you just aren't trying.

Just a word of warning, nothing comes for free. Yes, you may apply for the investment allowance and obtain a refund of your tax from doing so, but be warned that this is a high audit area for the ATO.

So before you rush in to buy a car solely on the premise of the investment allowance you should go speak with your tax advisor first.
