  • Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, that's the High Court and the National Library in the background. Nice pics, great looking car.

Well that's one way to get rid of the big ugly plate holder...

But it leaves gaping holes in your bumper!

        • But the holes are plugged with the two black plastic caps which cover the screws on the original ugly holder. I think that picture looks HEAPS better than if the holder were there!

          • Ah I didnt notice the plugs. I thought they were just holes.

I agree - with plugs its worthwhile.

Now where would you source these plugs that fit?

Trouble is, it looks like they've drilled holes into the bumper to mount the plate using the plate's top mounting holes. As a result, the plate appears tilted upwards at an odd angle.

I've bought (and received) a plate from Lakin plates that's designed to fit over the front bracket and cover the stock plate holes... now I'm wondering if it wouldn't have been better to get a custom bracket made up to mount directly to the bumper instead. Oh well, I could always do that... I'll see how the car looks when the bracket I've purchased is mounted, when the car arrives in a few weeks.

Edit: I wonder if the bumper's holes (that mount the stock bracket) are in the same position as the plate holes on the stock bracket? I doubt it, but hey, if I'm lucky, my Lakin bracket might fit to the bumper directly as-is. Anyone who has removed their stock bracket care to comment?

                As per what Corey said:

So my guess is they come free with the car.

                • I think your guess would be wrong.

The dealers have made it clear to me whenever i've asked that the plate holder will not be removed.

Now the client of this dealership might have got someone more accommodating who has taken off the plate holder and sourced the black hole caps.

But I doubt this will be a common occurrence or offered to customers.

                  • I can confirm that the 'black plugs' are the plugs from the original ugly plate holder. You won't need to source these from anywhere as they come with the car.
There is another member that has alread performed this modification and confirmed this. (I've just done my 2nd 14 hour day at work in a row, so I can't be bothered trying to find it now, so just take my word!)

As for the plate not sitting correctly and tilting upwards at an odd angle, that can be resolved by placing a rubber washer behind the plate (or plate cover) so that it sits flat on the car.

                    • Great. So I should have no reservations with ordering black euro plates because I can simply take them off, remove the plate holder and use the plugs (with some washers) to fit my slim line black euro front plate. Corey for attention to detail and knowledge is bloody nuts brother. Keep it up.

I finally got a chance to take a couple of quick snaps. Not portrait quality but they'll do for now.
