2010 vw golf 1.4 tsi

Hey my nephew has got a 1.4 golf which just stopped have tried starting it will crank but wont fire on odd occasion it will fire with foot buried to floor but only max 2-300 rpm then stops. Its not throwing any codes either anyone local that could may be help the young lad or scan it with vcds maybe.
