  • Sticky Interior Door Handles on Mk6 and similar age Golfs

A common problem on older Golfs is the deterioration of the vinyl ( fake leather) on the door door pulls due to hot and humid Australian weather conditions. I searched aftermarket replacements but they would have taken too long and I wasn't sure about quality, fitment etc. I sourced them through my dealer at $128 for the two front doors, purchased a trim removal kit from Repco- plastic pry bars of different shapes and sizes- and watched a YouTube video on how to remove and replace. I will have the door trims components tomorrow and hopefully say goodbye to sticky hands. Cheers-John

Here is a guide on removing the door trims.

I removed mine on my Mk6 to upgrade the speakers, the trim removal itself is very similar to most other cars, but the little clips VW use are basically designed to break when the trim is removed, so I would suggest you buy 1/2 dozen new clips as you will no doubt break some.

Just make sure you pop the old ones out to look as the pic for both of these look or you will wreck them iff you dont.

I popped mine out using the forked body tool

Thanks Hillbilly, I had a look today at the new ones,as the car is with my wife today, and I think that the forked tool will work the best. It's handy to have the new ones, as you can see the clip placement. Cheers Mate-John

I meant to use it to spread them apart after they come out as they mostly pull out in their closed position and you have to spread them so the inner bit goes back up the shaft to touch the little ball on the end. Then when you whack the skin back on they compress to hold themselves in

Thanks again, I'm going to take some time on Sunday morning as I'm working Saturday and I don't want to rush it. I'm often impetuous, so I'll have to take a chill pill. Cheers.

Replacing the sticky door pulls on my Golf MK 6 couldn't have been easier. With the right trim removal kit and it's plastic pry bars of different shapes and sizes it took about ten minutes for both sides. Just go steady at the task and gradually remove the covers; the replacements just snap into place with a few gentle whacks with your hand. Cheers-John

I had a problem with the A/C on my MK 6 Golf. After say about 30 minutes at highway speeds, the air flow stopped and the fan speed slowed considerably. Mark Armstrong at Marks Mobile Auto Air Conditioning on the Sunshine Coast pondered on the problem and ran the car up to about 2000 rpm with his gauges attached. One of the pipes iced up and Mark surmised that a valve in the compressor was staying open and dropping the air temperature at the dashboard to minus 2 degrees. The pipe was frozen and blocking airflow. Rather than replacing the compressor Mark replaced the valve and regassed the system for a fraction of the price of a new compressor. My view-stay away from the big operators who may systematically replace components one at a time and cost you a fortune. Try a small local specialist who has time to think through an issue. Cheers-John

Sounds like the same sort of issue i am having..
Going for a long trip on the highway the air con randomly stops after awhile and fan speed slows to almost nothing.
Quick fix i found was to turn off the ac and blast the fan full ball till air starts flowing out again then a can turn the ac back on till it happens again, works fine around town.

May i ask how much it cost you for the fix?

                    Thanks.

Hi Venomqld, It cost $605 which you would have to balance against the cost of a new compressor- guess around $1500- $2000. I'm happy with the result and put it down to being able to give a clear picture of the symptoms, and a repairer who actually listened to me, dwelt on it for a while, asked my opinion, and between us we came up with a likely cause. He had the job done in a couple of hours and was very professional in all aspects of his work. I hope that helps and saves you from a major component expense. Cheers-John

New a/c compressor is $445. Probably around that cost again for install and regas.
