Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Any Golf R members with NPC clutch and vibration issues?

    Hey all,

I had an NPC SMF clutch put in my MK6 Golf R a few months ago.
Originally I had wanted a DMF as I didn't like the old rattle sound at idle in my MK4 gti with the lightweight SM flywheel.
But I was recommended by a new mechanic the NPC SMF clutch because they were "extremely quiet" and that I would barely notice it.

Unfortunately, even after 2000km of bedding in, it's a far cry from quiet.
At idle though it's nice and quiet, but not when driving under load particularly in 4th and 5th gears from 2000-3100rpm and approx half to full throttle.

It also gets a pretty ugly vibration sound on takeoff.

Basically it feels like I'm driving around in a piece of junk now so I'm pretty disappointed in the install.

The mechanic is saying that this is normal, which I think is pretty rubbish, and totally inconsistent with what was promised.
My car has basically in an unsellable condition as a result of this install.

Are there any forum members with this clutch combo that could give me feedback on whether they get vibration in these same conditions?
If there was someone in Sydney whose car I could check that would be great.

I've uploaded a video which you can hear the vibrations. You'll need good headphones or speakers with bass to reproduce the vibrations accurately:
