water pump replacement needed after 55,000 kms

Hi everyone,

I actually posted this question on another forum earlier today. I hope it is ok that I re-post it here (I'm in a bit of a rush to get an answer as we are supposed to take our car in for repairs on Monday):

We have a 2012 Golf 118 TSI Comfortline. It has recently started making a noise and, though it has only done 55,000 kms, we were told that the problem is the water pump and that it would need to be replaced. VW have offered to pay half the replacement cost (we would have to pay about $500-$600). Is this reasonable? Doing a bit of searching online it seems that car water pumps should last about 100,000 to 150,000 kms, for example see:

Is it worth trying to push VW to cover the whole cost? If they don’t agree is there much that we can do?

Water pump replacement is usually done with timing belts/chains/tensioners after 105,000km OR 7YEARS so is about due.


If you do both together its about $1300 and its wise as to do the pump is as much work as doing both

I paid for mine after the 7 years but car had only done 42000km

Thats why I wrote timing belts/chains/tensioners Nothing lasts forever and plastic water pumps certainly dont and it seems the 7 years

is recommended life expectancy

The chain driven engines don’t have set timing chain replacement interval and should last life of the engine, therefor you don’t replace the water pump with the chain and tensioner and there aren’t replacement intervals for the water pumps.

Up to you I paid for mine because it was only an extra $250 on top of what I was getting done.

I think you have to tick email notifications in your profile to get them

Its a PITA job. If they are paying half that is good, but it should last longer. Mine went at 40k
