Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tyre fitment on wheel size 18x8.5 +45

I'm getting new wheels fitted to my Mk6 gti soon and currently awaiting shipment. My question is should I fit it with a 225/40 or a 235/40? And will the tyre stretch? Thanks guys.

Hey there. The 19x8's on my Alltrack Wolfsburg have 245's fitted and they look right IMO. If you are going to fit an 8.5" rim, I would think that 235 would be your preferred size - nothing narrower.
    Cheers

235/40R18 wont stretch as 8.5" is the measuring rim width for this size tyre. 235/40R18 can be fitted on 8-9.5" wide rims. So if there is not much cost difference, it will increase your rolling diameter by 7mm. This is quite acceptable and will probably give you a truer indication on your speedo. If you prefer the stretched look, 225/40R18 would be better (rim width range 7.5-9" and measuring rim width 8").
