Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I fitted a K&N panel filter to the son's 1.8i Laser and it made a huge improvement to performance, revs much more freely as it is breathing much better than a standard paper filter will allow. I think I will definitely invest in one for the new GT Sport TDI when I get it soon

Just make sure if you fit one to your vehicle that you either take it out and whack in the original before services or make sure you let them know about it. I have heard from a few people that some have been thrown away at service time by unwary apprentices and mechanics.

Thanks for all the informative replies.

I had one in my SSS Pulsar and it rocked. They provide you with the stickers etc to plaster all over the place warning the mech's.

I had a look at K&N but it appears that there may not be one avail for the GT? There is one for the GTI which is a flat panel. Is it the same?

Go to autobahn and give the dimensions they will match it up.

They do give you one sticker to stick near the airbox to say DO NOT THROW AWAY MY EXPENSIVE AIR FILTER ell ok not quite but you get the idea.

The Part # for the GT TSI is 33-2865 (I ordered one last week)

According to BMC filters http://www.bmcairfilters.com/ the 2.0 TDI and 1.4 TSI is the same item, BMC Part # 444/01

Cheers champ! I gather the BMC operate similarly to the K&N?

I would say the same if not very similar. I referred to BMC as they're British and K&N is American. The USA don't get the diesel models that I'm aware of so they don't really have any incentive to manufacture parts for them.

Don't expect a big boost from a filter though, maybe 1-3kW at the most if your car is standard and not modified. It will allow a bit more induction noise but nothing like a pod filter.

I take it that the 2TDI can't take a pod filter without signficant (and warranty voiding) alterations?

Talk to your dealer, or if you follow my idea, get onside with the people in the service centre. Technically, the dealer shouldn't have fitted a towbar to my GT, as it's not a VW option it would seem...

Always a grey area, but at the end of the day it takes a massive 15 mins to convert back to your stock airbox every 15k's if you're really worried about it, but you'd possibly get hit up for a new element at it's change km's!

OK cool - and in your view a pod gives some additional grunt?

A pod will give you alot better air flow, but it will have to be shrouded in some way to prevent the induction of hot air from your engine bay, and for the legal reasons of some states. Look at a Carbino or BMC CDA.

Or if you're a bit handy, Modshack. I can vouch for the product and difference! A Pod without a shroud to prevent hot air ingress as much as possible is pointless. Will sound better, but actually lose power through chewing engine bay hot air. Beats me why the drifters and other jappers so blatently do it.

Cheers guys - sounds awesome. So what benefit would a flash + pod give?

                          Does a pod void warranty?

Hi there, could you post a pic of your setup? From what I understand the 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TDI have the same stock airbox setup.

                            Thanks in advance
