Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • K & N Air Filters

    Hi guys,

Can the GT Sport 2TDI take a K&N? Any real additional benefit or is it a placebo?

Dunno 'bout the filter, but an extra 5kW can be had by fitting the supplied K&N stickers to either side - under the mirrors...
PS: under the Pioneer & Nismo stickers

      I wouldnt bother.
K&N's tend to oil up the MAF, dont filter as good as the paper type filters and sometimes dont flow as good as the paper type.

I have to say that it is alot of hearsay and not enough proof about the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor problems. I have run K&N and oiled type air filters on all of my previous cars, and never had a problem, and never heard of it until i joined this forum.
Further more, K&N actually state that their oiled type air filters WILL NOT effect/cause problems to the MAF in any way, and if ANY vehicle is found to have had any problem with their MAF in any way related to the use of a K&N air filter, K&N WILL test it, and pay for any related repairs while the car is still under warrenty. These are very big claims to back up, and given how the Americans love their use of litigation against false, advertising K&N have alot to stand by, and they have had these claims independently verified.

Yeah, I really think they do run better than standard. BMC is another great brand worth looking at.

I put one in, but have to say the biggest improvement in the inlet came when I went to a pod over the standard airbox. The problem seems to be in the 90 degree outlet in the lid, and the adjacent rather restrictive MAF grid. If I felt anything with the K&N panel, then I felt 50 times more with the straight pod.

As you can get K&N panels for a bit over $60 if you scan e-bay, I'd say why not! MAF's have oiled up in the older TDI's after a LOT of KM ( scan TDI club ), due no doubt, to over oiling. Still, it IS hard to work out just how much oil to use with a K&N.....

I will say that my APEXi dry filter is doing an amazing job, and I just reverse flush it every few thousand with the air compressor. A lot of dust and debris comes out. Still, it is a throw away whereas the K&N is a life unit.

There is another thing too, where do you think the Crank Case breather tube comes in...after the air filter and before the MAF, and sometimes plenty of oil vapour(way more than what is in you K&N) comes through that bad boy and onto your MAF...and back into the engine.

K&N's sound good, look half good and seem to be good for your car.

I say that's the third strike against the batter.

                      K&N FTW!

                            Soon as I got my golf I purchased a K & N replacement filter.

It makes a nice improvement to responsiveness.

I would buy one evertime I buy a different car.

A paper one cost 30 bucks a K&N 100+ after a year it has paid for itself.

The main problem with oil using the panel filters is not oiling it properly.
                              Over oiling will cause problems.
I had one on a pulsar that lasted 9 years, saved heaps on paper filters and was still fine when my daughter wrote it off.
