but then of course you have the 'cream of the crop' 1975 SL/R 5000 for a whopping $6,126.

as for the Golf GTI being a mid-life crisis car....i agree. here on the gold coast there are several of the 'elders' (shall we call them for this exercise - being the 40+) plotting around in the lovely MKV GTI, and i certainly have to admit i have thought of this issue long before this thread.

i would not find it anything to be offended about....more to be proud about. the whole concept of the mid-life crisis car is to re-live the rebellious 'fast-lane' lifestyle of your previous youth and what a better car to do it in. this means that the 'elders' compare the MKV GTI to the 'top-notcher' sports cars of their earlier days. just remember, these 'elders' are after something quick, attractive, comfortable, and reliable to have the last ditch attempt of impressing the young lasses of the community (and those slightly older ones waiting at the front doors of the RSL just before bingo night starts). for the money, i think they have chosen wisely.....not everyone can afford a porsche or ferrari.

for those young guns out there driving the GTI thinking its nothing more than a sports machine for the enthusiast/petrol head......that just re-inforces my comments. you guys like the car for what it is, and thats why these people are choosing it later on in life, because they are re-living that want for speed and style.

    i apologise for blabbing on.

    Cheers,
    Rhys

If the Golf V GTI is an old man's car, then what does that make the Polo GTI? A cut price boy racer GTI, for teenagers who want the V but don't have the income?

No Branko ... it's the natural successor to the Mk1 / Mk11 ... similar size, not as heavy as the MkV ... and nice dollops of grunt.

Don't go all 'sensitive' on us, Mischa. I just don't think you're right, and I think a lot of Pogo owners down south (MissVuks, Flaps, Floody, etc. to name but a few) would probably disagree with your statement too.

When you think about it ... like most vehicle development cycles, the Golf has been growing in size since its 1st inception, The MkV is waaaaaay larger that a Mk1 (some would say 'bloated' ... but I would never be that unkind ) and even the Pogo is bigger than the Mk1 ... but it's nearer it's size than a MkV (obviously).

I just thought it would be nice to make a vague generalisation about the polo so I could show you how pointless it is to make one about the V

I like the polo's performance, but its too small for me (6'4), and I prefer the interior quality and trim on the V, as its considerably better than the Polo and is quite similar to my 2.slow's.

its easily big enough for me at 6' and i have long legs for my size. i mean a bike is big enough for one person. i actually really like the polo but dont let the polo forum know that

My Mid Life Crisis was a GSXR1100 Suzuki, unfortunately I discovered that my reflexes were no match for the mono pulling, wheel spinning little beast and after 4 years I decided I was too old (45) for it.

After years of family cars (taxi for the kids) it was time for my wife and I to get new cars that we wanted without considering the offspring as they are both now driving themselves and only travel with us occasionally . Wife decided on the Mazda 3 and I spent 6 months trying to decide as my car would be the new 'family' car.

The SS commodore was on the list until I sat in one and ruled it out with out driving it. I wanted something with power without a huge body that was fun to drive so it was not so much as a mid life crisis as preparing for the empty nest.

When I started testing the turbo hatches I realised it was the only way to go.
After many worried salesmen and lots of testing fun the golf was the only choice and I still enjoy driving it.

So leave us more mature drivers alone, we are just enjoying driving for the first time in years

I can fit as well, but my hair is almost always touching the headlining. Come to think of it, I can only fit in a polo thats got a sunroof, otherwise I can't (comfortably). Those 4' make a big difference in a 3.8m car, believe me...

don't get all aggressive now....i never said anything bad about the MKV GTI. i like it myself but no, can't afford it as i only earn $30K p.a.
in saying that, i wouldn't call it cut price boy racer car. yes i am 22, but at my age to have a reasonably new euro car that easily does a low 6sec 0-100 with quality features such as heated leather seats....i'm pretty sure i'm not doing too bad . the 'cut price boy racer' tag is reserved for such cars as Starlet GT's and 180sx's....you should think before you say something stupid!
