Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk5 Golf GTI - Won't run (starts) after engine replacement

    Hello!

    **UPDATE** Problem solved.
-I've added the fix to the problem below-

Currently in the throws of a Mk5 Golf GTI DSG (2005) engine swap with a 97,000km replacement after the old one popped a cylinder.

New engine in today. Wired it all up, watered, oiled, battery back in and turned the key.

    Problem is:
Engine cranks, fires, runs for 2 seconds at a bumpy idle then chokes out.
I can also crank engine and put foot down on accelerator and hear it purr (lovely i might add) up to 4000rpm ish then with foot still on pedal, revs will fall then it will splutter off.

My thoughts on the issue but open to any expertise:
    • I've scanned the car with fully licensed VAG-COM but didn't get anything that popped out at me. Will scan again tomorrow and add it to this post.
    • Battery is old and will not hold charge. To make it crank I've been hooking it up to another smaller charged battery. Could the faulty battery stop the ECU from being happy with it?
    • The keys are not locking and unlocking the car with remotes. Have been opening door and alarm can go off as it wont unlock remotely. Could this be causing the immobiliser to kick in?
    • Further on this, the immobiliser signal and warning are not appearing when starting the car so I don't think its that issue.
    • Could the High Pressure Fuel Pump be faulty and not show a code?

Any help what so ever would be greatly appreciated as i would love to get it onto the road asap.

    Cheers guys

    Problem solved!
The intake manifold was throwing an error and couldn't be reset on the vag com.
The new motor I put in the car came with an updated flapper motor for the intake after they replaced the faulty one. The new flapper motor also needs an ecu software update which my current ecu doesn't have.

So all I did was swap the flapper motors from the new one, to the old one from the blown motor. Started first crank!

Try a throttle body alignment if you are sure there are no wires off, no airleaks and good fuel pressure.

Ah of course! I cleared the codes and thought that would have done it for some stupid reason. I'll give that a crack tonight.

Is it possible to check fuel pressure with VAGCOM?

I did another scan and I'm getting intake manifold runner issues.

I tried a basic setting on it but it's coming up with error. I think the runner is fried, but would this cause the car to not idle?

        Thanks again!

Anyone else have any more input? Still a little stuck. Not sure what's causing the issue.

How did you figure out that was the issue?

I had my flapper thing replaced at the dealer but never knew it needed an ECU flash.

It was showing an error on the intake manifold flapper motor. So what I did was just swap the electric flapper motors over from the different engines and it worked.

I think they updated the intake manifold and it comes with new software so I had to run the old one.

But I'll go and get it updated for the new one sometime soon.
