        • changed the timing chain and tensioner, destroyed the bolt! Tip you if anyone is doing this and stripped the bolt, get a T55 and hammer it into the bolt, this will be tight enough to remove it out, took a mechanics impact gun to get it out!

            • Today I picked up a second hand rear bumper trim and a pair of original VW headlights... cheap... I’ll be fitting them in January and will report with images... [EDIT] Apparently it’s called a valance.

                • Got a gearbox service - flush and fluid change.
That has fixed all gearbox issues for me, it is as smooth as it has ever been.
Did the yearly engine oil change and then the bonnet strut gave up. So ordered and replaced bonnet and boot struts.

                  • Mk5 GTI did not start. Thought battery, nope. Called NRMA and they diagnosed starter motor.
After getting it to the mechanic, was probably the first Mk5 starter motors he has done - and I think definitely the first for this car.

                    • Hello All, hasn't COVID been a trip? well, I just got around to sorting out some things on the Golf and realised that I still have to replace the aftermarket lights with OEM - I know its a backwards step re lighting but I honestly yearn for bog standard. Must be age. Anyway, just checking it.

                        • So, I finally bought a Haynes manual for the Golf 5. UK edition. Meh. I remember when Haynes showed phots of a complete engine and body tear down and back again. A little disappointed but I suppose I'll find some help within if the need arises.

                          • Today I bought a bottle of Meguiar's PlastX Plastic Cleaner for $28 from Repco after deciding the clean up the OEM headlights I reinstalled on the Golf. Now, I was going to tacked the headlight cleaning issue with grades of wet and dry and a plastic polish but I noticed the Macuiars product claiming to do pretty much the same thing without scary sanding.

People. let me say that Meguiar's PlastX Plastic Cleaner works a treat. One or more applications scrubbing with a lint free cloth (actually, scrubbing is overstating the process a bit), then clean off the excess.

                            Too easy.

                            • Nice result on the headlights, I tried something similar years ago and made a mess, ended up paying someone to come do it properly with a clear coat spray too.

Got any before and after pics ?

                              • Like almost every Golf 5 I've seen in the wild, mine has long lost its sliding cupholder cover. I bought a replacement on eBay, expecting it to be a dodgy after market item... amazed to open the parcel and find a shiny new VW OEM item, albeit missing one rubber pad and the bottle opener (I already have both of, so... yeah...). A new project.
