Golf GTI Mk5 PRNDS flashing

Firstly im new here and sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Anyway to the Problem I'm currently looking at buying a 06 mk5 golf GTI with a DSG gearbox (115000ks)

It drives really nice and shifts really smoothly, also being full log booked services and DSG has recently being serviced aswell as the timing belt being replaced.

Anyway sometimes when shifting back to park the PRNDS lights flash seems like this is an issues that occurs for some). everything still works perfectly and you can put it back in drive and nothing is wrong other than flashing. To make it stop you just need to put it in Neutral and turn it off and on again... Just wondering if you can educate me on the issue? or point me in the right direction Cheers, Alex

You would have to get it scanned. When the prindle indicator is flashing, it means there is a fault, or faults logged for the transmission.

There is a little microswitch inside the gear selector unit that tells it when its in park - this commonly fails by intermittently sticking and results in the symptoms you are having. Eventually the microswitch will stay stuck completely.

The switch is used to tell the ECU when the gear selector is in park - if it gets stuck everything will still work but a code will be logged and PRNDS will flash. Cycling back from park to neutral will reset it but as you have found it will reoccur.

The only fix for this is to replace the entire gear selector unit - as its all sealed together and difficult to get into. Although you may be able to get at the microswitch with some WD40 and the straw....but this may just be a shot in the dark.

I had the exact same problem on my old Mk5 DSG, the gear selector unit can only be removed from underneath - so you have to remove the exhaust to get at the bolts - also you have to remove the gear knob itself and surrounding trim. I just picked up a second hand unit on ebay for about £40 iirc (it was some years ago now).

thanks for spending the time to respond, sounds exactly like the issue that is occurring. I will start looking around for prices for parts. Was fitting it hard?
