Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

(I agree MP3 doesn't sound very good. I recorded a series of Beatle albums at 256kbits and the sound isn't all that crash hot.)

I'd be careful about installing a speaker not specifically rated for use in cars (and judging by the PDF, its not...but i could be wrong). The temperature variations may start to damage the speaker over time.

thanks for the imput. i have done a little research before i jumped in. The cone is made of glass fiber and plenty of people have reviewed http://www.mobileelectronics.com.au & http://www.diymobileaudio.com://
and used these drivers in car audio setups.

i did not want to fork out a fortune on a new 3 way just to get mids. i have soldered the all compnents together for my passive crossovers. just waiting to receive the speakers tomorrow and will start install.

I put this link in the Audio section but thought it wouldn't hurt to share here as well http://www.rainbow-audio.de/

Check out the IQ speakers they designed specifically for MK5 Golf.

I ordered a set of IQ series speakers for my W124 Mercedes (arrived at post office today) as normal aftermarket speakers won't fit without a lot of screwing around as Mercedes adopted an unusual mounting method and enclosure sizes. They're not cheap due to the crap exchange rate but have heard nothing but excellent reviews for Rainbow speakers.

Will be fitting the speakers this weekend.....as well as new seats for the TDI courtesy of Mischa
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

i also have heard good things about rainbow. focal, dynaudio and i think hertz also do drop in replacement 3way set as well for the mk5. all of these options don't give alot of change from a grand. but for me i wanted to save a couple of bucks. plus try something different. if this mod yeilds results i will look at replacing the tweeter with a ribbon type to give smoother transition into the highs.

The way to save on the exchange rate is to buy local from authorised resellers that way you get backup and warranty without the hassle.

Don't think the brands other offer the direct factory replacements like Rainbow for the Mk5.

Very true, but I had trouble trying to find an authorised reseller when I was looking for my speakers.

Or... you could of emailed Rainbow in Germany who would of passed on your email to us and we could of pointed you in the right direction, seems logical

For the record, and to get to my 1000th post, I've had the front passenger door apart this arvo to fit my Boston pro's, and the mid is indeed a 4" and the woofer a 7" unit. Stuff all depth for a mid if you go that way, but a fair wack for a woofer, but only with a spacer, as the metal is right on top of the window mech. The pro's clear easily in the stock holder, which seals to the trim nicely. Odd size, but I just modified the stock speaker / plastic holder to take my 6.5" with an adaptor ring, such as supplied by boston, and it was pretty straight forward job. Much harder was running the wire through the door harness rubber doobie!

I seem to recall the rears were a smaller 6" woofer and my replacement 6" boston SL's pretty much bolted right in.
