Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk V Speaker Size

Hi all, I posted this question in the audio section yesterday but no replies as yet, hopefully someone here can help.

This may seem like a fairly dumb question but I've tried searching (honest!) and haven't found the answer. What direct bolt in front speaker sizes are available for Mk V golfs? If someone could provide a size and any recommendations I can go fwd from there. Obviously I could remove the trims to find out but I want to avoid that if possible. I've been out of the car audio game for quite a while and had MB Quartz splits in my last aftermarket installation (about 7 years ago - and they were awesome), are they still one of the front runners?

These won't be running off an external amp at this stage but a 4 x 45w deck. I may look at an external amp if I can find a quality brand that's cost effective.

    Any help is appreciated

Perhaps because it looks like he is driving a GT Sport (Juding by the badge in his avatar)? Do they have the same sound system?

Yup, it's the GT Sport w/ 8 speaker setup and RCD300 head unit. Not very impressed so far and will be getting the AVC-9000 Head Unit w/ Sat Nav, Ipod, Bluetooth etc and thought it best to upgrade speakers at the same time. Anyone know speaker sizes though? I've done a bit more searching and think that they're 6.5" but want to get it confirmed.

              Will do, there's a thread at GolfMkV.com
I came across this the other day, in the classified section of Watercooled.org. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=12612 It's not the RNS-510 but it looks OEM, more like an upside down MFD2. Apparently it costs $899, and is fully compatible with steering wheel...

which is the same unit as I'm getting. Looks good, not perfect but a lot better than standard.

I think the 8 speaker setup has 2-way components in each door (or somewhere in the rear for the 3-door). Whereas, the 10 speaker setup has 3-ways in the front and 2-ways in the rear.

I think the woofers are 6"x7" or something kinda strange like that. So you'd need to add some sort of spacer to fit a 6.5" in that space. Should be able to make something up out of MDF.

As far as I know, there are no direct drop in replacements on the market.

You'll need to be careful with speaker depth otherwise you could run in to some trouble with your windows or re-fitting the trim over the top.

You also need to be careful. According to the vortex, the speakers in the doors need to be fully sealed as the side-impact sensor for the airbags actually works on air pressure i.e. when the door deforms in an impact it's volume changes which changes the air pressure.

If the speaker is not sealed front to back (i.e. whatever way you mount it - I understand that the OEMs are riveted in) then you risk your side airbags not working.

I don't have any links at the moment but the DIY threads in vortex should have more information.

The RCA 300 base unit has no RCA's, and I highly doubt the beter head would be any different. On the back of my old unit it has all manner of CD plugs shown in the main plug, and I assume these drive any factory stacker. Welcome to the very weird wiring world of VW. I replaced the head unit in my GT with an Alpine, and having done about ten systems now, it wasn't straight forward in the wiring, even with a very nice specific adaptor.

There are three speaker holes in the front doors as GLR has pointed out, and the GTI has mids in the middle spot whereas the GT has a plastic plug. The bottom woofer beside the seat is an oval 5 x 7 or something, if you get a powerful torch you can check it out. I have 6.5's to go in, but they may require a little fabrication. I have bostons, which come with a heap of excellent metal adaptors for this sort of thing, so it won't be too hard. I have as yet to do the door speakers, so I'm all theory at this stage.

As for external amps, you're limited by space, and it's an under the seat affair as in the GTI, of if you've a big'un like me, a spare tyre well deal. Again, work in progress.

Having swapped out some oval speakers in my last Ford, there are indeed drop in options available, but only limited models. I actually ended up with a worse sounding system driven from the factory head, so be careful what you decide to do. I must say the Alpine head drives the stock GT speakers to an amazingly better sound, so much so that I have been in no rush to tackle the speakers as yet. That, and I have too many projects on the go at once....

Thanks for the info, very informative. I was thinking the same, may just start with upgrading the deck w/ maybe an external amp (approx 4 x 50w) and see how that goes. I've noticed that the drivers need a good quality source, the existing system sounds half decent with a well mastered CD but sounds very ordinary with a MP3 cd.

                        That's all good information though

Im not sure about that. I took my trims off to find only 2 speakers. There were sections that were not sealed airtight, especialy the area under the window. I installad a set of 4in in the holes where they should be. Big problem due to magnet size. I was unable to buy OE from VW. Made up some crossovers with parts from Jaycar, 6in LP 3000Hz, 4in BP 200-9000Hz, 1in HP 9000Hz. Sound improvement dramatic, I get deep rumbles from the big speakers with the right soundtrack. I also sealed off all holes with gaffa tape.

Could you give me a few more details on what speaker you installed in the empty holes and also more detail on the crossovers from Jaycar or what components you used to make them. Thank you.

I took the trims of and this is what we have. Front-1in tweeter,7in woofer. Rear-1in tweeter,6in woofer. The only crossover is going to the tweeter at 4.7uF (8800Hz), the woofer is getting the whole frequency range(which it shoudn't)and is making it sound cr_p. VW were no help in sourcing the 4in mids so I bought my own. As I kept the rest of the system I was not going to spend a lot of money and ended up with VDO Dayton 2ways,$60-80 I think. I removed the tweeter from the 4in mids so all I had was the woofer. V difficult to install due to magnet size but they are now rock solid.Crossover components are; 7in-0.22mH,4in-0.1mH & 200uF,tweeter left as is. From the 0.22mH inductor remove 12cm of wire, & from the 0.1mH inductor remove 15cm. This gives a freq. split of 7in 0-3000Hz,4in 200-8000Hz & 1in 9000 & above. This is all 6dB/oct slope. Inductors & capacitors are mounted on the positive wire only. Get the 100volt non polarised crossover type of capacitor so it won't matter which way you install them. For the 4in it doesn't matter what comes first cap. or ind. The wires come from the head unit & go to the 7in. They then branch from this plug and go to the tweeter. Do a diagram of what you have & a diagram of what you wish to do.Think 3 times, cut the wires once. Mounting the 4s took me 3hrs , making the crossovers 20mins, conecting it all up 1.5hrs. I will not say this job was easy but the result was worth the effort. There is a lot more to it, if you need to know more I will be glad to help.
