Sorry to drag up an old thread but we've just bought a 2007 Jetta 2.0 FSI Tiptronic and reading up on maintenance requirements. The vehicle data sheet indicates that service interval type is QG1 (variable/long life) and I've read that VW's made after 2000 are all QG1 - so I guess that means servicing is due every 15000 kms or 12 months (our Jetta has done only 22000km in 2 years and serviced twice in that time). I'll be doing routine checks to top up oil etc and in reading this thread came across the term "WIV" as in the quoted post. Can someone tell me what "WIV" means or stands for please.

Castrol did UOA for me twice, 4 years ago, so I think that all big oil companies are able to do oil analysis, it won't be cheap, expect to pay around $100 for one of UOA only.

I have done my first oil changed at 5,000km and the oil is really dark black. I have asked the VW dealer mechanic and he said the oil that they use is the Castrol Super Longlife SLXIII. After the first oil changed with the ESP the car now run on another 6,000km and the oil hasn't been black yet, just turned to dark brown. That proved the Mobil oil is better quality and it's running very smooth on acceleration.

Oil is supposed to get black. Getting black is good, it means the detergents are working and the oil has good capabilities to handle solids in suspension (rather than them falling to the bottom of your sump).

As Obama says "Black is better".

Not sure who does the testing in Australia for a reasonable price, I know in the US they have cheap kits you can send in and get the result back soon after and it's a fraction of the price here. I'd rather just change the oil on a regular basis though.

There are a number of labs & depending on the level of analysis it can be as cheap as $25. For our work equipment (300L hydraulic reservoirs with major environmental risk when we change the oil) I buy the sample pots in lots of 10 & it works out at ~$35 a test including postage. The suction tool to put the oil straight in the pot without contamination/mess was $125 but you could do it with a $5 bigbore syringe & some tubing.

Righto, let's clear this up right now before someone stuffs up their car.

These specs are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE - 504 is for longlife petrol/507 is for longlife diesel.

The original enquirer to whom I was responding has a 2.0 TDI - hence my discussion re 505/506/507.

The use of 504 spec oil in any 2.0 TDI (or even 1.9 TDI) would VOID THE WARRANTY and probably lead to ENGINE FAILURE.

As much as I hate agreeing with Mav, he is right. By good planning, coincidence or serendipity all the oils tha have achieved 504 spec have also achieved 507 and viceversa, therefore the oils (not the specs) are interchangeable.

Depends on the dealer but I pay ~$160 for a oil change, filter and labor using the Castrol oil at my VW dealer

Also, I went to Autobarn and ask for the same type of Castrol oil. They quoted me close to $150.00 per 5L. I have no idea where the price comes from???

It's an expensive oil and not common but if you buy it in bulk it's a lot cheaper. For the 5L containers I think it's around $90, Autobarn must be trying to make a huge profit on it. The VW dealer I use only uses this one oil and I assume gets it in large drums.

I am located in Taylors Hill, Melbourne. I don't know where I can get that kind of price $220.00 for 20L of Mobil1 ESP like you have in Brisbane?

Ring a few Mobil distributors (call Mobil and they'll tell you the local ones). The price I had from the distributor out at Rocklea in Brisbane was ~$220.

If you mean your first oil change was at 5000km the oil will be black as that was the factory fill and the oil may have been darker to start out with. I wouldn't rely on colour of the oil to tell you it's condition as synthetic oils tend to turn black earlier than mineral oils. The only way to really tell is to send a sample of the oil off to a lab to be tested but as this cost is often more than an oil change it's pretty pointless.

No, it was a private/independant store close from home and I am used to buy most of the auto parts from them, the owner gave me the price! As from what I know the price is still cheaper than 12 x 1L plastic bottle.

As gregozedobe stated it's pretty simple so no reason to be confused.

Just buy a 504.00/507.00 oil to top up with. I prefer to use the same one that is in the car but as I haven't changed my oil yet I'm unsure what is in there so will have the dealer top it up for me. When I do the first oil change I'll be going to Mobil 1 ESP (or something like that) that has 504.00/507.00 certification and using that for the rest of the time that I have the car or unless VW bring out new standards that require a change.

I understand that VW are using Fuchs as the factory fill in all the VW cars now.

I have read this post with great interest, and also the one in "Fuels & Lubricants" entitled 2.0L TDI Oil http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ead.php?t=2087. Probably this thread should have been posted in that section.

However, as I am taking delivery of a 1.9TDI in Sept, I have found these posts interesting, confusing, open to some interpretation and expensive.

The conclusions I have come to so far are;

VW use Castrol 5W30 SLE Professional SL II which is not available anywhere except perhaps from Castrol and VW - not cheap, but necessary if your VW is fitted with a Diesel Partical Filter.

You may TOP UP with any other suitable approved oil but oil CHANGE must be with Castrol 5W30 SLE Professional SL II.

I saw a half litre oil bottle at the Solitaire VW Service Centre last Saturday, and I'm sure it was that oil.

Next time I'll find out the cost.

I am still not sure how this applies to the 1.9TDI.

I'm using Castrol Powerflow Profesional 5W30 since that oil was engineered for VW Tdi, so it should be the best for the VW engine. I'm sure, if you use other VW approved oils the engine will be just fine.
The question is:
Is Castrol oil made in Australia as good as the one made in Europe?
If not, than VW507.00 oil made in EU could be better.

I'll throw in my 2 cents.
I've used Mobil 1 ESP in my Caddy since 2006 back when it was a 506.01/(whatever the petrol was) and is now 507.00/504.00, done 110,000km so far on it, still runs like it's new, so must be awesome oil...

Meets VW 504.00 / VW 507.00 / VW 507.01 according to product specs.

That oil is fine, and is being superseded by Penrite Enviro+, the 5W-30 is the appropriate one with VW Certification.
