Engine oil and another Q

I was at the dealer last week buying some top up oil and was told that they use Castrol SLX III 5w-30 from the factory (for the TSI motor anyway) and bought a litre of that. They did tell me though that the dealership uses Mobil 1 for servicing/changes. In that situation I guess it comes down to which distributorship the dealer can get the best bulk deal with as long as it meets the same specifications.

As gregozedobe stated it's pretty simple so no reason to be confused.
Just buy a 504.00/507.00 oil to top up with. I prefer to use the same one that is in the car but as I haven't changed my oil yet I'm unsure what is in there so will have the dealer top it up for me. When I do the first oil change I'll be going to Mobil 1 ESP (or something like that) that has 504.00/507.00 certification and using that for the rest of the time that I have the car or unless VW bring out new standards that require a change.
I understand that VW are using Fuchs as the factory fill in all the VW cars now.

Maris,
Just make sure you use an oil that is VW 507.00 approved. This is suitable for all VW PD TDIs (except for early 5 cyl 2.5 R5 motors, which should use VW 506.01).
Buy a spare litre so if you need to add any you can add the correct oil without needing to worry.
Insist that the dealer puts in the correct oil and marks it on your service record (that way you are covered if anything goes wrong later on).
SLX II has been superceded by SLX III (VW 504/507 approved), but there are other brands around that are also VW approved for VW 507 (and 504).
All VW PD TDIs with DPF should use VW 507.00 to protect the DPF.
If you are buying a new 1.9 you might also want to research running in TDIs correctly.

I have read this post with great interest, and also the one in "Fuels & Lubricants" entitled 2.0L TDI Oil http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ead.php?t=2087. Probably this thread should have been posted in that section.
However, as I am taking delivery of a 1.9TDI in Sept, I have found these posts interesting, confusing, open to some interpretation and expensive.
The conclusions I have come to so far are;
VW use Castrol 5W30 SLE Professional SL II which is not available anywhere except perhaps from Castrol and VW - not cheap, but necessary if your VW is fitted with a Diesel Partical Filter.
You may TOP UP with any other suitable approved oil but oil CHANGE must be with Castrol 5W30 SLE Professional SL II.
I saw a half litre oil bottle at the Solitaire VW Service Centre last Saturday, and I'm sure it was that oil.
Next time I'll find out the cost.
Maris
I am still not sure how this applies to the 1.9TDI.Last edited by WEDEL.1; 14-07-2008, 09:59 AM.

solved
Thanks all for your input & just a follow up note.
Replaced the dodgy engine oil with Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow VW LongLife, and a new filter and that seems to have solved my smoke issue… I’ll be buggered.
There is still a puff if I really burry the boot but I’m putting that down to over fueling via a flash upgrade.

OK I will throw my hat into the ring.
When I picked up my Pacific TDI the service manager sold me a liter of oil.[for the oil consumption of the diesel motor]
The oil is Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow
VW LongLife 111 5W-30
on the back of the bottle
VW 504 00/507 00
so I would take it to mean that it is suitable for motors that need 504 and motors that need 507
but wtf do I know

Pedders - what's this all about?
I think it's time to get out of here.

As I said in my post which you clearly didn't comprehend, I don't work for Highway Auto. Even if I did this wouldn't be relevant because what they said was correct and what you posted was incorrect and misleading.Originally posted by Rileyowner View PostAnd what about No. 2?

What are you on?Originally posted by Maverick View PostIn other of the other threads you're recommended people use pedders when everyone else is warning against them. Do you really know what you're talking about???
(The message I thought I was responding to seems to have disappeared).

You originally said they were 'interchangeable'.
(2) I was told someone from Highway posts regularly on this forum.
