Highway just have no idea - about sales, service or anything

507.1 is the recommended oil for 'long life service'. However, Boettcher used 505.1 in my TDI Jetta for its initial 7,500 km service. But my 15,000 will be 507.1.

Without being too confusing, the specified oil for your car is probably 506.1.

507.1 has been developed for TDi engines with diesel particulate filters.

Thanks - 504 was advised by Highway. Ian Botcher (Ipswich) advised 505 as the "cheap stuff" and 507 as "the stuff". Austral in their usual high customer service standard is not open on Saturday - They have the only bne agency for my other car so I'm already familar with the disgusting level of service they will be dishing up....

Any one know if we can get the "VW recomended" Castrol product from any where in Brisbane other than the dealers? Repco's application list shows the product but they can't get it.

To comfirm mine I rang the VW Info line which should be on a sticker in your front windscreen.. its a 1800 number. They helped a bit (see more below), but I went to Super Cheap Autos (no I don't work there) and attached to the shelves are books with all model cars and types where it will advise you the right oil for your car (one for each brand of oil).

BTW when I rang VW Info they stated for my GTI that it needed to be fully synthetic preferably 5W30 and that they recommend Castrol

So I did end up getting Castrol Edge 5W30 as my top up fuel which was what the book at the auto shop recommended.

    Engine oil and another Q

    Hi

As this post may show I’m new to VWing… Purchased a (2005) Golf Comfortline last weekend (2.0TDi + DSG + Leather + sunroof + GTi body kit, suspension, wheels with 48Ks). Briliant car but I can’t even get a drive now .

Anyway I have some oil questions, so first I’ll give the details thus far.
    - Car was perfect on test drive & inspection.
    - Since picking it up it was initially very smoky (black/grey unburnt fuel smoke). I suspected that the fuel that they provided was substandard so I’ve run that out (aprox 150km) and filled it with BP from the outlet that I use for my other vehicle (also HP unit injection), using BP it has improved noticeably but there is still some smoke.
    - Yesterday (Sat) I spoke with a good friend who is a diesel injection specialist (handy hey) and the first thing he says is….. “What oil is in the engine? If it’s not the proper VW stuff it will smoke.” He’s one of the gurus at the Bosch/Denso & what ever else Injection centre. He also recomends a new air filter.
    - The car was purchased from a non VW dealer, they did the service (think it was just the oil change) prior to pick up. The oil now doesn’t smell like the synthetic in our other car nor does it smell the same as it did during inspection – yes I’m really anal. So let’s tick the box that says “I’ve got the wrong oil” and let’s not drive that car.

After coming to that conclusion I made some calls to find some good oil. In Brisbane we have 2 VW parts centres open on Saturday. (for 5L) The first Quoted $98 for 504-01 and says “that’s the stuff you need” – the second quoted $72 for 507-01 and says “that's the stuff you need” WTF! (Seems some dealers are checking the floor for clues)

What is the correct oil that I need?
VW Golf TDI 2.0 Urgent Oil Topup - mentions a Castrol product. Where can I buy it from?

Not that I'm complaining about this one - It seems to go heaps better than the new ones we test drove so another Q.. How could I tell if it has a Piggy back (exactly where would it be) or if the ECU has been flashed?
Might get diesel man on this one.

Thanks in advance for answering all the really stupid questions that I WILL ask in the future – if your forum group is anything like the owners forum of our other car I will have an enjoyable stay here.
