ended up getting a GTI, dealer stuffed up pricing of r32 so in the end it ended up being 10k more... I decided R32 wasn't 10K better than GTI

don't get me wrong, I really loved the R32 and was very close to buying one.
Loved the sound, the handling, the brakes.

Big thing for me is that I don't have a garage and I felt the R32 deserved to be taken care of. Having it in a carport with neighbours brushing past it, etc - didn't really want to spend that extra money for something nice like an R32 and then not be able to look after it like it deserved.

The GTI is more 'disposable' in that sense if it gets a bit knocked up then no biggie It's not like it's an R32 or anything

Also not doing a lot of highway driving on my daily commute, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to open up the R32 as often as I would have liked, it felt like it was just coming into it's own about the 60km/hr mark, which is a shame because under most [public road] situations that is where you _should_ stop accelerating.

On the upside, the 10k I saved (well, maybe 8k after a reflash) is going into the kitty to go towards whatever succeeds the R32. If the VW engineers were psycho enough to build such an awesome exhaust for the R32, I'm sure they will do a similar job for their incarnation of the R32's successor.

The successor to the MkV R32 won't be a V6 though...

its actually the unique angle and firing pattern of the v6 which gives it that distinctive exhaust note

2: initial power on light 1/4 throtle take off from still or slow (like round abouts) (if held steady) is too much for light throtle as the Turbo boost mounts, Subaru have this all over VW. I'm sure this can be fixed with an after market BOV, but am yet to try it.
Not sure I understand this comment - do you want them to engineer in some turbo lag??

The lack of lag is what make the engine so good. VW has done a MUCH better job than Subaru in that regard

There is internet chatter (I know I know) that there may be a turbo 5. Check out this sound in the TT RS.....

                        GTi (Bluefin Stage2 + Milltek)vs R32

Read all threads with fascination, I must be the only one to have had an R32 manual first then I got a GTi DSG.

I had the R32 for a year and loved it was so entertaining to drive. Then I broke my clutch foot, when it was better I would get too much pain with all the gear changing.

I decided to change my R32 and get the next best thing a DSG, but GTi or R32 was the dilemma...I already knew how the R32 felt and handle so I went to trail over a few days a GTi....I was amazed at how close the performance was...but the GTi felt fresh and nimble and could feel stright away that it was a lot lighter and not as nose heavy when cornering.

So I bought the GTi 3 door DSG in white, nearly had it a year and I am so happy with it. I have fitted a full Milltek Exhaust system which does not sound that much different but added a bit more urgency to the ride.

The big change came when I added the Bluefin upgrade, first was stage 1 with an amazing increase in performance, then I got a free upgrade to stage 2

The mods done to my GTi have made it quicker than my old R32, I still know the guy who has it and we have done a few standing starts, the GTi just puts an instant legnth at the start and pulls away slightly.

With the stage two program the GTi is harder to get off the line as there is so much torque, but onced launched it would just leave the R32 for dead.

I drive the GTi with the stage one installed, stage two is two dangerous to my license.

Thanks for sharing your comments, interesting. There are 2 things I love about the R32 that the GTI doesn't have, that nice blue colour and of course the exhaust note.

My R32 replaced my V8, currently averaging 9.4l/100 on it (and I drive a lot in Sydney traffic). XR8 was between 15-16l/100.

I usually do about 800kms a week and was saving upwards of $60 a week just in fuel.
I find myself in a similar situation in that I have a VE SS and want so much to be in a GTI or R32. Did you get satisfaction by trading or did you sell privately?

What a great read so far from an "oldie but a goodie" thread. Its that eternal battle between the choice of GTi vs R32.

The GTi and R32 are such different animals. I must admit after driving them both back to back, I much prefer the R32. I find the sound just so intoxicating - I just need to hear it over and over again.

The difference in price at the end of the day is not that much if you are to option up the GTi to have leather, xenon, etc... The 4WD system and that sonorous V6 at the end of the day is worth every cent IMHO.

I have just put a deposit down on a brand new R32 last week.

I know I'll be living on peanut butter and toast for the next 3 years, but hey, you only live once.
