yeah, that was what I was thinking, granted it does use 2L/100km more than the turbo by ADR fuel consumption calcs, but it uses 2L/100km less than my current car
since I only do 10000km a year it won't affect me too much I think. Wanting to hear the v6 rev, will, though, i fear

Ive had both. GTI was tuned and R32 stock.
I like the R32 better for the recaros, handeling and noise. Not fuel bills
GTI for huge torque(tuned), turn in, price, fuel econ. and its gti
If i had to make choice between them both new and money was no issue R32 is more fun as the noise/recaros are awsome.
I you have a GTI I wouldnt stress as i'd have another GTI in a second, even a standard one. They look better than the R32 also!!

thanks for your 20c (yes, i reckon that was worth more than 2c )... when you comment re: R32 fuel bills, how much more were you finding it to be? (I'm assuming you were fanging both equally).
True, I like the front of the GTI much better than the R32, although the smoked rear lights of the R32 are better I reckon.
Disagree strongly with this one. AWD is incredibly good when you want to pull out on a busy road in the wet weather or for anywhere else where traction is important.
I get into a FWD or RWD car and I find I have to think twice than with the AWD, will there be enough traction etc etc.
Sure you can setup a fWD or RWD to be a hell of a lot more grippy but I don't think they can match an AWD for outright grip in day to day driving.
Coming form an AWD background. The R32 does not put out the power to require AWD.
The GTI all the way, plus potential is the winner.

And after a day on the track...this was the biggest lesson my wife took away from her experience behind the wheel. The traction that is available, is not just for wank factor. There is a practical use for it, and she now knows that she can merge/pull out quicker than before, she can evade the non-indicating lane idiots much easier, and the car does look a bit of a sleeper to the P plate brigade at the lights. Especially when they look over and see my angelic wife at the wheel, looking straight ahead...minding her own business.
(But what they didn't see, was her left hand reach forward to turn off the TC...nor did they bother to hear the V6 RPMs rise to 2800rpm, but then they saw the disappearing arse of the Blue Blur as she left them at the lights...laughing her head off)

My missus has been known to indulge in the occassional traffic light GP (but strictly only in the dry and only up to the speed limit). More likely if the other car is a bit loud or ricey and has a huge exhaust can on the back (you know, the one that is inversely proportionally in size to the drivers "manhood", as per the little finger road safety ads)
They really get taken by surprise by a quiet 50 year old woman driving a stock "family wagon" with enthusiasm (and she doesn't even rev it before the lights change - don't want to give the competition any indication that they are about to get dusted.
2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).
As a GTi DSG owner, I love it... great fuel econemy (much better then my previous Turbo Subaru's)... only two complaints with the DSG...
1: cruising along @ 60km/h, plant your foot flat to make it through an orange light and the engine just revs while the car tries to decide what gear to chose (kick down takes longer then other 'non-performance' Auto's I've driven which is dissapointing
2: initial power on light 1/4 throtle take off from still or slow (like round abouts) (if held steady) is too much for light throtle as the Turbo boost mounts, Subaru have this all over VW. I'm sure this can be fixed with an after market BOV, but am yet to try it.
Other then that though, for an Auto/performance car, its great car... I'm hoping that an after market ECU upgrade will help resolve the first mention issue.
