Blowing smoke

so 17,000 k's into my GTI journey and i'm blowing a bit of weed when I out the hammer down.

You can only see it at night in the car behind me's headlights, can't see it during the day.

Anyone else having this - should I be concerned?

Yes and nope you shouldn't be. It's normal for the GTI. Take a look at other GTI's and you will see dirty exhaust tips. There is a thread on this on golfmkv.com that goes into detail.

gasket? valve seals? i mean.. this would only be if you beat the crap out of your car.. like holding it on redline when it's cold.. i mean 17xxxkm is nothing.. yeah.. could be just condensation..

how often is it? as in, is it always when you gun it? or only when the cars warming up?

If you're up your GTI, of course it's gonna blow a bit of smoke. As long as it's not plumes of blue or black smoke, which indicates mechanical failure. Same applies to all petrol vehicles (and diesel as well). Under hard acceleration, the ECU richens the fuel delivery right up to give maximum power. There'll be a little bit of unburnt fuel, hence the light bit of smoke.

just under hard acceleration and when the car is warm / hot.

i'm going to take it in to have the O2 sensor checked just incase, better to be safe than sorry.

I do drive m car hard from time to time but more in a 'wearing out the tyres' hard. I don't ever bounce it off the rev limiter.

These cars are built and designed to be driven hard and in Europe they are driven hard on a daily basis so i'm not overly concerned - just wary and thought id ask.

Whenever I've followed a Mk5 and they have given it a boot full I've often noticed they tend to let out a little puff.

You should see mine (over 3 years old/90,000kms) when i boot it.....leaves a big ass puff of black smoke.....most turbo cars will do that as explained above...

the smoke volume is increased when running on the APR Program (more fuel)....funny that

Pointless exercise mate. Unless your engine light is on while you're driving, they won't fault it. And they'll probably charge you for the diagnosis as well. The ECU ignores the O² sensor under hard acceleration. The only time readings are taken from the O² sensor is when the vehicle is idling and under light acceleration. The rest of the time it's either running too rich (acceleration or cold-start) or too lean (cruise) for the O² sensor to do its job.

They can see if they can work out my DSG hesitation as well while they have it.

well the car went into Barloworld Mentone today and they couldnt fault either the smoke or hesitation in the DSG - which is fine by me. All under warranty so no cost but peace of mind all the same.

I must say that Barloworld Mentone is a much better place to take your car than those clowns at Sth Yarra. The guys looked after me very well and even gave the car a clean (which it was desperate for).

I had a good look at the R36 wagon in black and I must say, I am looking forward to the next 2 and a bit years to be over so I can trade in the GTI for the R36!!!

Would you believe that I started my car today and the OIL LIGHT came on!!!

These clowns can't be serious. I take my car in for blowing smoke and ask if it could be using oil, they claim to test it and 5 days later my oil level is so low that the light comes on!!!

Stay tuned tomorrow after I post the results of their excuses and reasons why no one checked the oil level in my GTI.

Pissed is an understatement.
