Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • OED LED Tail lights Golf MkV

    Hi,

Has anyone installed/know anyone who has bought and installed the OEM LED rear lights? I was in Osborne Park yesterday and was behind a MkV GT Diesel (united grey, GTI body kit, number plate DZL GT) who had these lights and they looked HAWWT.

    Let me know

    Cheers

Were you in the white GTI that pulled into Osborne Park VW?

They aren't OEM unfortunately, they are just ebay cheapies. I'm very happy with the look (and they should be nicely complimented by the black 18's with machined lip I'm having fitted tomorrow ), but just be aware that these ebay lights are prone to getting a bit of condensation build up in cold, wet weather.

You can get them at TM tuning (the black ones have only recently been added), but I got them here:

You can also get them through www.oempl.us. I've had mine for about six months. Very happy with them.

Keep in mind that you'll need to get the fog light / reverse light lenses swapped over. The tails are made for LHD vehicles. PM me if you want more info.

I have just received a set of the OEM LED tails.
In the process of doing the lens swap.

              Installed

              Done.
The photos really dont do them justice when theyre on, the red is alot deeper in real life and the orange is too.

They look great. Were they easy to fit? Would a 'two left hands' person (me) be able to do it (other than the lens swap - I've arranged for that to be done by someone with a left and a right hand)?

I've also got the in.pro smoked mirror indicator lenses to fit - I think they will look good on the BG as well.

Do the LED's do that cool self-test when you turn the car on?

Very nice!! I reckon it's one of the best looking in the business with the shared diodes for red/amber lights.... not sure why VW hasn't put them in any of the Golfs

Also they could've made more use of the outer ring of the reverse/fog light...

just two nuts each side accessed by pulling back the carpet in the boot behind where the lights are you could probably do it with your feet

PS Logzy - you need to clean that mark off the rear screen under the middle stop light..

Yes you could fit them easily.
I'll have to check out the inpro smoked mirroe indicators again as i do think they will look good.

Yes they do the cool self test pattern and if you turn the ignition on then run realy fast to the back of the car you can see it.
No one here to help when i fitted them as im home from work sick.

The mark on the rear screen is where i just wiped it with a chamois.

Ive also got a nice little GT Sport badge now sitting below the golf badge but i forgot to put it on before i took the photos.
                          It looks good.

You did well if you are sick and managed to do it.

Do you reckon it would be okay to replace the outer lights and leave the inners until the lenses get swapped?

Yeah, other than it looking a bit funy maybe it wont matter,
The inners are filament globes anyway, its only the outers that are LED

When you put them in and are tightening the 2 nuts, tighten them evenly and be pushing the light into the body of the car to get it to sit in nice and snug.
There are some small clear rubber pads that you want siting up against the car body. Do the nuts up firmly but dont overtighten them.
You only want them nicley nipped up so they dont rattle.
You should be right, you'll know what i mean when you get into it.

Where are you , melb, syd ????
