  • New engine in Golf GTI

I have found info on VWvortex forums that the GTI engine is replaced with the new 2009 version as from March 08 builds.

This engine has a number of changes to balance shafts, camshafts, and ECU.

It notably has a compression ratio of 9.5 versus the previous 10.5. Apparently it's a bit wider, and would make installing a larger turbo difficult if not impossible due to less firewall clearance.

Will make chipping/ECU reflash a different proposition again.

There are already some of these engines in the country

Certainly aftermarket turbo fitment will be possible - there is actually a heap of room with the MK5's firewall. Its one of the first IHI / KKK turbos (similar to what is gracing the latest RS6)

Without reading the linked thread........would the reduced compression ratio mean it can run on 95RON?

Yes & no - even the early AXX with 10.5:1 compression can still run 95 ron, but the ECU backs the timing & boost off, you may as well buy a non turbo car (no - its not that bad )

So you will still be able to run 95, although I'm sure there will be a sticker inside the fuel flap stating "98 ron only"

Hey Breno - long time no see

BP Ultimate is pretty widely available here, but $=

            Last week I paid $1.87/litre. I expect it's into the $1.90's now.

Unfortunately there's no 98RON competition, so BP bend us over.

95RON is ~20 cents/litre cheaper, so if the new GTI performs optimally on that brew it represents a pretty significant difference in running costs (along with the deletion of a cambelt change on the new engine).

I have a March 08 build and it's the old engine so this may be different for Australian models.

I'm starting to think so too, since the Tiguan 147 according to the specs on VW.AU website is running the old engine, where as every other market that I have looked at has the new one.

                    Hey Mav,

My car is march 08 build as well. On a different note can you tell me whether your car has the aux in jack in the centre console for ipod connection.

                    Cheers

From what I have been told our first delivered new engined cars will be November / December - so if thats correct, it will be a manufatcure date of July / August.

This works out with the normal model year changes which is August / September changeover.

                        Hey smuts,

My GTI is also a March 08 build and has the AUX jack in the armrest. Was quite happy to see it there as it makes playing an iPod really easy! Mine's a German built 3 door and it seems more 3drs than 5drs come with it fitted.

Sounds like when I order mine tomorrow, it will still have the old "known quantity" engine. I believe there's one landed in AU with my config (except it has sunroof which I don't really need - maybe I can get the roof at a real good price.......) or if it's ordered and scheduled for prod'n it would be odds on to have the old engine as well. I'm leaning towards stumping up for the roof if it means getting the car 4 months earlier

So it's off to the stealer tomorrow for the final number crunch

It does but I haven't tried it yet as I have a RNS510 fitted (was a RCD500 from the factory), I enabled the aux in last night and will find something to try it with on the weekend.
